Uncertainty about government regulations already in place and others that may be coming are hampering economic growth and stifling efforts to create jobs, area business leaders said Friday. Today, Congressman Patrick McHenry (NC-10) voted in favor of H.R. 2378, the Currency Reform for Fair Trade Act. This bill takes a measured response to unfair currency manipulation by China and other countries, which has cost the U.S. more than one million jobs during the last decade, including hundreds of thousands of textile and apparel jobs. Congressman McHenry is a co-sponsor of this legislation. H.R. 2378 passed the House of Representatives today by a vote of 348-79.

The bill, HR 5160, was primarily designed to help Haiti recover after its recent devastating earthquake. Chuck Costner doesn't think his father would be alive today if America had nationalized health care. His father, Charles Sr., had triple-bypass surgery at Gaston Memorial Hospital last August -- two days after he went to his doctor and complained of dizziness. In countries with socialized medicine, Costner said, the average wait to see a cardiologist or other specialist is six weeks.

Health-care reform and jobs were key topics as 10th District U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry held a town hall meeting Tuesday night. The session drew a standing-room only crowd to the Cool Springs Administration Building. McHenry estimated perhaps 250 in attendance. McHenry, a Republican, first offered his outlook on three issues before taking questions from the floor.
