Supporting our Troops
As the world has become an increasingly dangerous place, our federal government has failed to provide our military with the resources they need to keep up. This week, my colleagues and I have began to change this with passage of the Bipartisan Budget Act. With this vote we are standing with President Trump and our Secretary of Defense, General Jim Mattis, in fulfilling our shared commitment to fully supporting the U.S. military and ensuring we keep all Americans safe.
In addition, the bill signed by President Trump Friday morning includes funding for health care programs critical for western North Carolina including a two-year extension for Community Health Centers and additional funding to combat the opioid epidemic. This bill also repeals Obamacare's Independent Advisory Board (IPAB), which gives power to unelected Washington bureaucrats to control senior’s access to Medicare. As President Trump has made clear, the most important aspect of this legislation is the increased funding for our nation’s troops. This bill will help repair the readiness gap that developed during the Obama Administration and also allow our military to grow so it can properly combat the various threats around the world. Earlier this week, House Speaker Paul Ryan released the following video—which can be accessed by clicking here or on the image below—highlighting why this increased funding is so vital.

3 Million Americans and Counting
Every week we see more proof that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is helping American's keep more of their hard-earned money. Whether through bonuses, pay raises, better benefits, or by expanding job opportunities, over 3 million Americans have already benefited from this landmark legislation. Tax reform has led to U.S. companies paying over $3 billion in bonuses while customers at businesses like Duke Energy are seeing lower utility rates. To see a list of the more than 300 companies—including Lowe’s and Thermo Fisher Scientific—across America that have passed savings from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act on to employees and customers click here or on the image below.

Last Tuesday, I had the opportunity to sit down with Alex Gangitano of Roll Call for their Heard on the Hill’s Take Five interview. During our conversation, I enjoyed discussing my role as Chief Deputy Whip and the challenges I faced while filling in for Majority Whip Steve Scalise. I also shared some updates on the newest addition to the McHenry family, baby Rese, and how my older daughter Cecelia is adapting to her new job as big sister. House passes landmark bill to overhaul sexual harassment policy on Capitol Hill
The Hill
On Tuesday, the House unanimously voted to reform the Congressional Accountability Act. This vote sends a strong message that workplace harassment of any kind will not be tolerated and further, this helps ensure that every person, from Members of Congress to Congressional staff, working in the People’s House is provided a safe and fair workplace environment.
Fallen N.C. soldier's name lives on in Belmont
Gaston Gazette
In 2009, one of the Tenth District's own, 1st Lt. Leevi Barnard, made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our nation during the war in Iraq. Recently, the Readiness Center at the National Guard Armory in Belmont was renamed to carry on the memory of this brave young man. I am thankful for 1st Lt. Barnard and all our nation's heroes for everything they do to defend our freedoms and keep our country safe.
