Congressman McHenry Weekly Update

National School Choice Week

This past week we recognized National School Choice Week and we celebrated every parent’s right to choose the education that is best for their child. Research proves that children are more likely to succeed when a parent is empowered to choose the school that best meets the needs of their child. Keeping our Government Funded

On Monday, I was proud to join my colleagues in the House and Senate in voting to reopen the government. This vote ensures our troops are paid and the vitally important CHIP program is renewed for six years. In North Carolina there are over 200,000 children who rely on the Children’s Health Insurance Program and, in the Tenth District alone, the senseless government shutdown put over 18,000 children at risk of losing their health insurance. Going forward, I hope Senate Democrats will quit the partisan political games and get back to work on behalf of the American people. Learn more about why I voted to end this senseless government shutdown by clicking here or on the image below.

Tax Reform is Helping American Businesses Give Back

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act continues to help American families and businesses in the Tenth District and all accross the country. Last week several businesses, including Disney, Starbucks, and FedEx announced that they would be using the savings from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act to give back to employees and consumers with wage increases, bonuses, huge savings, and expanded American investments. North Carolina's Duke Energy has proposed cutting prices for consumers as a direct result of the tax cuts as well. Many other U.S. businesses are also choosing to give back their tax reform savings. Click here for a list of these companies courtesy of Majority Whip Scalise. What I Have Been Reading

Tuskegee Airman to speak at Gaston College

Gaston Gazette

Harold H. Brown isn't letting his age keep him from inspiring young people to reach their dreams. As one of the last surviving Tuskegee airmen who served during WWII, Mr. Brown is certain to inspire many and it is exciting to hear he will be returning to Gaston College, where he briefly served as acting Vice President, to share his experiences.

Police, firefighters learn about drones

Gaston Gazette

At a public safety workshop hosted by the Department of Transportation, Gaston County law enforcement officials learn about drones and how they can help enhance public safety. Very neat to see how far this technology has come since the Gaston County Police Department became the first law enforcement agency to use a drone twelve years ago.
