Congressman McHenry Weekly Update

A Busy Week at Home in the Tenth District

Last week, I had the opportunity to tour and meet with the people and organizations working hard to continue to make the Tenth District such a wonderful place to live. I started my week by touring the City of Mount Holly's new fire station. I especially enjoyed this tour because my daughters were able to tag along. This is the department's third station and will serve the northern section of the city. It also serves as a substation for Gaston EMS and the Mount Holly Police Department.

On Friday, I toured Rising Hope Farms & Horses for Hope in Claremont. These ministries provide a safe and inspirational environment to interact with horses. The goal of these ministries is that God will use this facility to provide fun, peace, and healing for all involved. They serve as non-profit therapeutic riding facility and use equestrian activities for the purpose of contributing positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of those with disabilities.

I then travelled to Hickory to tour the impressive Catawba Valley Community College Workforce Solutions Complex. The 80,400-square-foot facility houses technology and engineering programs, including Computer Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Computer Integrated Machining, Electronics Engineering Technology, Automotive Systems Technology, Welding, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics and Robotics, and Heating/Ventilation and Air Conditioning.

Afterwards, I met with RESULTS to discuss the problems facing our communities here at home and around the world.

I also enjoyed my meeting with AARP where we had a productive discussion on the important issues that are facing older constituents here in the Tenth District.

I ended the week in Maiden where I was honored to present a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol to Mayor Bob Smyre in recognition of his thirty years as mayor and his dedication to the Town of Maiden and western North Carolina.

Celebrating Tenth District Schools and Students

I am always impressed by the teachers, administrators, and students I meet with at schools here in the Tenth District and Gaston County Schools are no exception. It was an honor to address the crowd gathered to celebrate 50 years of success since county and city school systems merged to form Gaston County Schools. As a product of this great school system, I am grateful for the positive impact on my life. Thank you Superintendent Jeff Booker for your leadership!

I was even more impressed by one of the Gaston County School students I had the privilege of meeting with last week. I enjoyed learning more about Kweli Meadows new business refurbishing shoes, which I got to see first hand since Kweli wore one of his refurbished pairs to our meeting. It was impressive to see how much this young person has already accomplished right here in the Tenth District. Congratulations on receiving the 2019 Gaston Chamber of Commerce’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year award, Kweli! You can learn more about Kweli's business and our meeting by clicking here to read an article from the Gaston Gazette.

Serving our Tenth District Veterans

Last week, for Memorial Day, we honored our nation's fallen heroes and thanked all those who served for their courage and their sacrifice. The Tenth District is the home of almost 50,000 veterans and I am proud that my office has been able to provide assistance to some of these brave men and women. If you or someone you know is a veteran in need of assistance click here to learn more about some of the ways my office can help. Thank you to all of our nation's heroes for their service!

What I Have Been Reading

9-year-old with rare form of dwarfism 'promoted' to honorary detective

WSOCTV

This story is a great example of how our Tenth District law enforcement do more than just keep our neighborhoods and our families safe. When the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office heard about Landen Johnson's love of law enforcement they invited him to become one of their own and was even dispatched to his very own crime scene. Thank you to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and all of our Tenth District law enforcement for the important role you play in our communities.

Democrats still haven't figured out how to fight Trump

NBC News

This article asks a question that my Republican colleagues and I have wondered about for some time now: what exactly have House Democrats accomplished since they took control in January? The answer is nothing. This is a stark difference from last the last two years when Republicans passed massive tax cuts, increased funding to combat the opioid epidemic, and much more.

At least 12 dead after disgruntled employee opens fire at Virginia Beach municipal center

CNN

Giulia and I were deeply saddened to hear about the horrible tragedy that occurred in Virginia Beach on Friday afternoon. I am thankful for the actions of the Virginia Beach law enforcement who put their lives on the line to put an end to these tragic events. Please join me in praying for the family and loved ones of the victims and for the Virginia Beach community as they grieve.
