Congressman McHenry Weekly Update

Back Home in the Tenth District

With Congress out of session on Monday, I was glad to be able to start the week here in the Tenth District. My first stop on was to the Leona Neal Senior Center in Shelby where I spoke with a number of our local seniors. Thank you for taking time to share your concerns with me.

I then had the chance to stop by the Shelby Police Department. Thank you Chief Jeff Ledford, Officer Matt Melvin, and Katie Munger for taking time to update me on the Reset Program. The Reset Program works with those recently released from prison in an effort to decrease recidivism. It is great to see so many partners in the community joining in this effort.

Later that afternoon I toured Greenheck in Kings Mountain. Greenheck is a leader in industrial ventilation with plants in Kings Mountain and Shelby. They recently announced an expansion in Shelby that will bring 400 jobs to the community. Thank you for your investment in Cleveland County and for taking the time to show me around.

I ended my busy day in the Tenth District by presenting Kristina Vaher of Gaston County with her well-deserved Gold Congressional Award Medal. The Congressional Award is the United States Congress’ award for young Americans. She received this prestigious honor for her dedicated service to Gaston County particularly in the area of promoting youth literacy. Calling For Hearings in to Facebook's Project Libra

On Tuesday, I sent a letter to Chairwoman Maxine Waters of the Financial Services Committee calling on her to hold a hearing on Facebook’s recent announcement of their new global cryptocurrency project. In my letter I highlighted that while there is potential for this new technology to foster financial inclusion and faster payments, many questions remain, and it is critical that the Financial Services Committee assess Project Libra and its potential unprecedented impact on the global financial system. I also had the opportunity to join CNBC to discuss why I called for hearings on Facebook’s recent announcement of their new global cryptocurrency project. Click here or on the image below to watch last week's interview.

Meeting with Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour Delegates

On Thursday, I had the opportunity to meet with delegates, including some from right here in the Tenth District, of the 2019 Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour who were visiting Washington, DC. hese students were selected to participate in this year’s tour by their local cooperatives based on their scholastic excellence and community involvement. I enjoyed answering some of their questions about my role as the Republican Leader of the Financial Services Committee, what it means to serve as the Representative of North Carolina's Tenth District, and much more.

What I Have Been Reading

Meet the Alexander family

Shelby Star

What a wonderful story about my friends Ted and Patti Alexander and their daughter Christina. International adoptions are often a long and complicated process that Ted and Patti experienced firsthand when adopting Christina from Romania. They are a great family and I am particularly proud—as a resident of Lincoln County—to have Ted representing me in the State Senate.

The Numbers Don't Lie

Office of the Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy

In just the month of May 144,000 migrants were apprehended at our southern border. This is just one number among many that makes it clear we have a real crisis at our southern border. Despite these facts Democrats still refuse to act even though it has been over 50 days since President Trump has requested emergency funding to address this crisis.
