Congressman McHenry Weekly Update - Honoring Our Nation's Heroes
Honoring Our Nation's Heroes
As we enjoy time with our family and friends this holiday weekend, please join me in remembering those who made it possible: all our American service men and women who lost their lives defending the freedoms we enjoy today. I am thankful for all of our nation's heroes and their service to our nation. Today and every day we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for this great country. May God continue to bless the brave men and women who serve today.

Combating Anti-Semitism
Last week, I introduced a Motion to Recommit to combat the BDS movement, which aims to weaponize the world’s economy with one simple goal: destroying the nation of Israel. Regrettably, a majority of members—led by House Democrats—voted down the amendment. Watch the speech I delivered on the House Floor calling on all members of the House to confront this hate and bigotry, denounce anti-Semitism, and stop the BDS movement by clicking here or on the image below.

Putting Consumers First
On Wednesday, I delivered a speech on the House floor highlighting the failures of H.R. 1500, a partisan bill which House Democrats passed this week. Instead of actually including the reforms that are needed to better protect consumers here in the Tenth District and all across the country, the first half of the bill is spent vilifying former acting CFPB Director Mick Mulvaney. The remainder of the bill also does nothing to bring transparency and accountability to the CFPB but rather continues to advance Democrat’s political agenda. Hearing from Secretary Carson
On Tuesday, the House Financial Services Committee held a hearing to receive testimony from the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary, Ben Carson. During the hearing, I applauded Secretary Carson’s efforts to bring much needed reform to the agency. These reforms include the Secretary’s work as chair of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council to help distressed communities stimulate development and entrepreneurship through tools like Opportunity Zones, established by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Celebrating 100 Years of Women's Right to Vote
On May 21, 1919, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the 19th Amendment. This vote helped pave the way for women’s right to vote, which was established on August 26, 1920 when the 19th Amendment was added to the U.S. Constitution. On this historic day please join me in honoring the tireless efforts of the suffragists and the countless women who helped shape the United States through their right to vote over the last century.

What I've Been Reading
Vice President Pence discusses U.S.-Mexico-Canda trade agreement at Union Co. plant

WBTV

I was very sorry I couldn't join Vice President Pence on Wednesday for his trip to North Carolina. It was great to see him visiting a Parkdale Mills facility. Parkdale Mills is a company headquartered right here in the Tenth District in Gaston County. Its employees are just some of the many Americans who will benefit under the USMCA.

Conover officer wins national award for his service as a school resource officer

Hickory Daily Record

School resource officers play an important but often unrecognized role in our schools. That is why I was glad to hear about one of the Tenth District’s very own, Conover Police Sergeant Danny Baker, who received the 2019 Floyd Ledbetter National School Resource of the Year award. Thank you Sergeant Baker for everything you do to not only keep Newton-Conover Middle School students safe but also for the positive impact you have on their lives.

A liberal law professor explains why the Equality Act would 'crush' religious dissenters

National Review

Recently, House Democrats voted for a bill that would not only violate long-standing protections of a person’s religious freedoms but also empowered the federal government to play a role when parents are making important healthcare decisions for their children. This article provides a good explanation of why H.R. 5 would be harmful to Americans.
