Congressman McHenry Weekly Update
Celebrating Our Tenth District Small Businesses
This week is Small Business Week: a chance to celebrate the many small businesses that call the Tenth District home. Below are just a few of these business who all play a very different but vital role in our communities. I'm thankful to have had the chance to visit and learn more about the important services they provide to western North Carolina. I had the opportunity to visit several small businesses in Shelby as a part of a small business crawl with the Internet Association to learn about the innovative ways they use technology to help make their businesses grow. Watch the video from this recent visit by clicking here or on the image below.

This past August I was able to join in for the ribbon cutting of a very tasty Tenth District small business. Scoop Ice Cream already has a successful store in Lake Lure and it was great to see them open a second location in Rutherfordton so we have even more chances to enjoy some of their delicious ice creams.

Another great Tenth District small business I visited recently was Blue Ridge Armor in Spindale. Blue Ridge Armor designs, engineers and manufactures bullet resistant armor and personal protective equipment for law enforcement agencies. Thank you for the work you do to protect the brave men and women who keep our communities safe.

I also enjoyed my tour of the family owned Warehouse Distillery in Newton. This small business not only proudly cultivates a passion for craft spirits in Catawba County but hopes to empower future generations of entrepreneurs.

Please join me in thanking all of the Tenth District’s small businesses for the important jobs and services they provide to western North Carolina. Follow me on FacebookTwitter, or Instagram if you'd like to learn more about some of the other wonderful Tenth District small businesses that I visit throughout the year.

Mother's Day
Please join me in wishing all the wonderful mothers throughout the Tenth District a very happy Mother's Day. Thank you for everything you do for our families and for western North Carolina!

Teacher Appreciation Week
Every time I have the opportunity to visit a school here in the Tenth District, I am impressed by how hard-working and dedicated our teachers are to the education of our students. This week, for National Teacher Appreciation Week, please join me in thanking all of our teachers here in western North Carolina and across the country.

Nurse Appreciation Week
Every day, nurses all across the country work hard to save lives and make sure we stay healthy. Please join me in celebrating these tireless heroes and thanking them for the important role they play in making our communities healthier and happier. Happy Nurse Appreciation Week!

What's Happening in DC
On Thursday, House Democrats once again proved they would rather play political games than actually work to improve the lives of the American people. This time they voted for a bill that would limit a state’s ability to innovate and develop health care choices that have been proven to help lower premiums. Click here or on the image below to learn more about how state innovation waivers work and how H.R. 986 fails to address the real issue—making healthcare more affordable for Americans.

What I Have Been Reading

'Let's tell Riley we love him': Hundreds attend service for UNC Charlotte shooting victim

Asheville Citizen-Times

Last week, the western North Carolina community joined the family and loved ones of Riley Howell in celebrating the life of this young hero. It was very touching to see the community come together to remember the many ways Riley had made the world a better place. Please join me in continuing to pray for all those impacted including the thousands of UNC Charlotte students from the Tenth District.

Rep. Patrick McHenry partners with Belmont Abbey College on internship

Gaston Gazette

Congratulations to Abigail Coupe on being this year’s recipient of the Capitol and Carolina Internship. It was an honor to start this program with my alma matter—Belmont Abbey—to give students like Abigail the chance to expand their knowledge and insight in to public policy and service to our nation, like I once did as a congressional intern. I look forward to having Abigail with us this summer.

'This is a celebration': Fallen officer's father thanks Mooresville

WSOC-TV

Giulia and I were devastated to learn about Officer Jordan Sheldon who was killed in the line of duty last Saturday night. Please join me in praying for the Mooresville Police Department and the family and loved ones of Officer Sheldon as they mourn this tragic loss. This is a terrible reminder of the sacrifices our brave law enforcement make every day by putting their lives on the line to keep our communities and families safe.

$6.4 million worth of cocaine seized during traffic stop in Lincoln County

Fox 46

This is a great story on a job well done by the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department. On Thursday, deputies seized a record 117 pounds of cocaine during a traffic stop. Thank you to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department and all of our law enforcement agencies for the important work you do to protect the Tenth District.
