Congressman McHenry Weekly Update

Six Months of Tax Reform

Six months ago, the House passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and gave Americans and small businesses much needed tax relief. Since the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act became law American workers and businesses are feeling better about the American economy. This growing confidence comes from all of the positive things that are now happening because of tax reform. We are seeing bigger paychecks, more jobs, and companies using their savings to invest in their workers and their communities. Click here to read an informative piece from Speaker Paul Ryan highlighting what tax reform has done in just six months or here for a list from the House Committee on Ways and Means to see some of the other good things that have happened since this historic legislation was signed into law by President Trump. Click here or on the image below for a great video on what the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act has done in just six months.

Legislation to End the Opioid Epidemic

This week, the House took an important step towards stopping the opioid epidemic that is devastating families and communities all across the country and right here in western North Carolina. In 2016, there were almost 2,000 opioid related deaths in North Carolina alone. The SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act will help fight addiction, provide access to treatment and recovery, and ensure communities and law enforcement have the resources they need to combat this crisis. Congressional Gold Medal Award

I enjoyed joining my colleagues Senator Richard Burr and Congressman Ted Budd on Thursday as we congratulated the recipients of the Congressional Gold Medal Awards from North Carolina.

The Tenth District had two recipients, Bennett Ruff of Forest City and Hannah Whittington of Denver, who earned these well-deserved awards through their commitment to voluntary public service, personal development, and physical fitness. Congratulations to all these hard-working students.

What I Have Been Reading

Belcher, Western Carolina University chancellor, dies

The News and Observer

Western Carolina University Chancellor David Belcher's passing is a tremendous loss for western North Carolina and our state as a whole. Dr. Belcher was a good man and a great leader for WCU. I particularly enjoyed working with him on issues affecting WCU’s Biltmore Park Campus which is located in Asheville.  Please take a moment to read Chancellor Belcher’s personal statement that he had read at his memorial service by clicking here and watch this tribute to him by clicking here. My prayers are with his family and the entire WCU community as they mourn Dr. Belcher's passing.

Senate rejects Trump plan to claw back spending

The Hill

Extremely disappointed to see my colleagues in the Senate fail to pass the $15 billion rescissions package requested by President Trump and passed by the House two weeks ago. This common-sense legislation would have enabled Americans taxpayers to keep more of their hard-earned money instead of it being wasted by Washington bureaucrats. .

Farm Bill

House Agriculture Committee

Thursday's passage of the Agriculture and Nutrition Act is not only a win for America’s farmers but also families and individuals trapped in a cycle of poverty. Currently less than one third of work capable SNAP recipients are working but today’s vote will begin to change that. The reforms to the SNAP program included in this package will help provide able-bodied adults with much needed access to adequate skills training. This will enable them to obtain a job that not only fulfills the work requirement but also provides meaningful income and a chance to improve their future.
