Hurricane Florence

As Hurricane Florence continues to cause devastation throughout our state, please keep everyone impacted by this hurricane in your prayers. I urge everyone to stay prepared and be smart as western North Carolina continues to receive heavy rain from Hurricane Florence. Click here for a link to some important safety tips for Hurricane Florence I’ve compiled on my website from FEMA, the NC Department of Public Safety, and other sources. In addition please continue to monitor the path of the storm, which you can do through the National Hurricane Center's website by clicking here or on the image below. Additional useful information from the state can be found here via ReadyNC.

Remembering September 11th

I was honored to join the City of Cherryville at the Cherryville Fire Department on Tuesday for their 9/11 remembrance ceremony. We will never forget what happened and those who were lost on September 11, 2001. Let us also remember the brave men and women of the New York Fire Department, the New York Police Department, the Port Authority, and the sacrifices they and all the other first responders made on that day seventeen years ago. Today and every day I am thankful for all of our first responders and the incredible job they do of protecting and serving us. We will always keep the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives on 9/11 in our prayers. You can learn more about Tuesday's ceremony by reading this Gaston Gazette article by clicking here.

Back Home in the Tenth District

With Congress out of session on Monday and Tuesday, I spent the first part of my week back home in western North Carolina. On Monday, I started my week by meeting with the Healthcare Leadership Council at my Gastonia office where we discussed healthcare policy issues in the Tenth District.

On Tuesday, I was honored to attend the Tryonota Volunteer Fire Department's Assistance to Firefighters Grant grant presentation. The grant will be used to purchase new equipment for the Bessemer City department.

At lunch, I enjoyed having the opportunity to speak to local leaders from Cleveland, McDowell, Polk and Rutherford Counties at the Isothermal Planning and Development Commission luncheon. It is great to see so many dynamic leaders working together collaboratively to move western NC's economy forward.

I spent the afternoon in Rutherfordton where I was honored to present a flag flown over the Capitol to Green Hill Volunteer Fire Department in recognition of the service to the people of Rutherford County. Thanks for all you do!

I ended my day at the Tryon International Equestrian Center in Polk County, which is on the world stage over the next two weeks as they host the World Equestrian Games. The World Equestrian Games is one of the largest sporting event in North Carolina history and will feature two weeks of intense competition from competitors from across the globe.

For additional photos from all of my stops throughout the Tenth District, be sure to follow me on Twitter and Instagram and like my Facebook page.

Economy adds more jobs than expected in August, and wage growth hits post-recession high

CNBC

Thanks to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and the pro-growth policies of our House Republican majority, every day we are seeing more examples of a booming economy. Not only are we seeing record low unemployment and job openings but wages are going up for hardworking Americans all across the country. Hourly earnings increased at a higher rate than was initially predicted proving that tax reform did more than just cut our taxes.

The Washington Post

Just this week, the U.S. Census Bureau announced median household income climbed to a record $61,372 in 2017, as the strong economy helped to lift the fortunes of Americans. The report also showed the U.S. poverty rate declining and is just another example of the good things happening in the U.S. economy.
