Congressman McHenry Weekly Update

Happy Independence Day

Giulia, Cecelia, Rese and I would like to wish everyone in the Tenth District a very Happy Independence Day! Independence Day is one of my favorite holidays of the year as we celebrate the birth of our nation and the values that make this country great. On this sacred day in 1776 our forefathers came together and declared our independence. As you celebrate with family and friends today, please take a moment to remember those who continue to protect these freedoms around the world and right here at home. Today, and every day, I am thankful for our American troops, police officers, and firefighters who make these celebrations possible.

Ending the Opioid Epidemic

Last Wednesday, I delivered a speech on the House Floor to raise awareness for those impacted by the opioid crisis like Tenth District constituent Jennifer Kline who lost her brother Jake to opioid addiction. We must do more to combat the terrifying rise of opioid deaths in North Carolina and all across the country. Two weeks ago, we took an important step towards ending opioid addiction with the passage of the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act, a combination of numerous House-approved bills aimed at combatting this devastating epidemic. Click here or on the image below to watch last week's speech last week's speech and click here to see my statement on passage of the SUPPORT Act.

Remembering Our Nation's Heroes

U.S. Air Force veteran Charles "Bud" Byers of Rutherford County created a memorial flag garden filled with rosebushes and flags from every branch of the U.S. military as a way to commemorate veterans and to remind all those who drive by of the sacrifices they have made. Click here or on the image below to watch a great video by Life in the Carolinas celebrating Bud and the wonderful memorial he made to honor our nation's heroes.

What I Have Been Reading

Eight Reasons This Defense Funding Bill is So Important

Speaker.gov

Last week the House once again fulfilled our commitment to the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to defend our freedoms. Under the previous administration, our troops did not receive the resources and the support they deserve as they protect the United States from growing threats like Islamic extremism and rogue nations like Iran and North Korea. House passage of the Department of Defense Appropriations Act is another step towards rebuilding our armed forces, restoring military readiness, and supporting our troops.

Trump celebrates tax law's 6-month mark as IRS rolls out smaller filing form

The Hill

Since the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act became law six months ago we are seeing bigger paychecks, more jobs, and companies using their savings to invest in their workers and their communities. Right here in western North Carolina we are seeing lower utility rates, employees are getting bonuses, companies investing in their communities, and much more.
