A Victory for the Constitution and the American People

Throughout his time in office, President Obama has attempted to ignore the will of the American people by acting unilaterally to advance his interests. From his executive amnesty program to the Iran nuclear deal and Obamacare, he has acted against the actions of Congress and drastically expanded executive power.

Two years ago, House Republicans introduced a lawsuit accusing the Obama Administration of violating the law as it related to the use of funds in Obamacare. This was a serious effort to reassert Congress's role as a co-equal branch of our federal government but--at the time--President Obama referred to it as a 'stunt.' This week, that stunt paid off for the American people as a federal judge sided with House Republicans and ruled that the Obama Administration was unconstitutionally spending money on Obamacare that was not appropriated for that use. This is a significant victory for separation of powers and makes clear that President Obama has acted beyond his power. Read more about the decision here.

Confronting a Crisis

Addiction to heroin and other opioid drugs has ravaged communities here in western North Carolina and throughout the nation. Drug overdose has become the leading cause of accidental death in the United States and the problem is only growing. This week, the House took action on sixteen bills to address this epidemic including bills that assist veterans struggling with addiction and help infants born addicted to opiates because of their mother using drugs while pregnant. These sixteen bills were then combined into the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act, which passed the House 400-5. These bills, which had previously passed in the Senate, now head to President Obama's desk to be signed into law. A full list of the bills passed this week can be found here.

Talking the RPM Act

In March of this year, I heard from constituents across the Tenth District concerned about a misguided attempt by the EPA to regulate amateur racers. This regulation would have ended a time-honored tradition and threatened many local jobs. In response I introduced the RPM Act which would block the EPA from pursuing this regulation. In April, the EPA responded to the introduction of my bill by withdrawing the proposed regulation. While I welcome this development, we must still pass the RPM Act into law to ensure the EPA never again attempts to implement this job-killing regulation. Recently, I discussed the RPM Act with Speed Sport. That interview can be seen by clicking the image below.

Proposed Legislation Would Expand Crowdfunding Opportunities and Benefit Millennial Entrepreneurs

Generation Opportunity

Crowdfunding--if properly implemented--has tremendous potential to help small businesses and entrepreneurs access the capital they need to grow and expand their businesses. However, the SEC's rules for crowdfunding, which go into effect tomorrow, limit the potential of this valuable resource. The piece above highlights how my new legislation allows crowdfunding to truly succeed.
