Productive Day in Gaston & Cleveland

After a restful Memorial Day weekend, I was back to work in the Tenth District. On Thursday I began my day visiting Gastonia's Schiele Museum of Natural History. During my visit, museum director Dr. Ann Tippitt showed me around the museum's James Lynn Planetarium where I watched a brief movie which demonstrated recent upgrades to the planetarium’s projection system.

That afternoon I headed into Shelby where I visited KSM Castings. In March, the company announced plans to expand their Cleveland County operations bringing in 80 new jobs. During my visit, I toured their manufacturing facility and learned about the lightweight automotive components they produce.

I wrapped up my day by visiting the recently opened Foothills Public Shooting Complex in Cherryville. The Foothills Complex has been described as the largest public shooting range in the southeastern United States. It was built as a partnership between Cleveland County and the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. You can read more about its opening here.

Friday in Catawba County

On Friday, I spent the day in Catawba County starting with a visit to South Newton Elementary School. During my visit, I was led on a guided tour of the school by a group of students.

Following South Newton, I attended the Catawba County Chamber of Commerce's Investor's Lunch at Conover Station. There I gave attendees an update on my work in Washington and paid tribute to Catawba Chamber President Danny Hearn who recently announced his retirement.

I concluded my day at Rock Barn in Conover. There I joined a press conference with local officials including Mayor Lee Moritz, City Manager Donald Duncan, and the Conover City Council to thank local leaders and FEMA for their work repairing the Rock Barn bridge that was washed out during flooding in 2013. Read more about Friday's event here.

More Bad News on Obamacare

The past few weeks have brought a tidal wave of bad headlines for Obamacare. First there was the news that United Healthcare--America's largest health insurer--would be exiting almost all Obamacare exchanges. Then in May, House Republicans won their legal challenge against the Obama Administration's funding of an Obamacare subsidy program. In recent weeks, there have been near daily news stories from across the country on the large rate increases insurers are requesting. Over the weekend, we learned the Obama Administration may have knowingly broken the law in relation to these same Obamacare subsidies.

This week brought news that North Carolina's two largest insurers are asking for rate increases of 18.8% and 24.5% respectively. Obamacare is fundamentally broken and must be repealed. The care provided under this law is inferior and far too expensive for people here in western North Carolina. Its time we repeal this disastrous law and replace it with a plan that actually reduces costs and improves care. What I Have Been Reading

Texas Floods: 9 Fort Hood Soldiers Dead, 3 Released From Hospital

NBC News

Awful news out of Texas this week as devastating flooding claimed the lives of four of our soldiers. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of these soldiers and also with all the people of Texas who have been impacted by this deadly rainfall.

US created 38,000 jobs in May vs. 162,000 expected

CNBC

President Obama spent Wednesday talking up the strength of the economy. On Friday, we saw the worst jobs report since 2010. Additionally, Friday's report showed a labor force participation rate of only 62.6%, nearing a four-decade low. This week highlights what I've said for the past seven years: President Obama does not know how to fix our economy and only with new leadership can we get Americans back to work.

Is This the Proposal That Could Save Crowdfunding?

Fortune

While crowdfunding portals officially opened for business three weeks ago, onerous regulations from Washington bureaucrats prevent crowdfunding from realizing its true potential as a resource for small businesses and entrepreneurs seeking to raise capital. I recently spoke with Fortune about how my recently introduced bill, the Fix Crowdfunding Act, will change that.
