Memorial Day

As we spend the long weekend with family and friends, we must not lose sight of why we celebrate Memorial Day. For generations, American sons and daughters have made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our nation and ensure we live free. The celebrations we've enjoyed this weekend would not be possible without their service and sacrifice. Today we honor each of those fallen heroes and say thank you.

Friday Back Home in Western NC

After a long and busy week in Washington, I was thrilled to get back home to western North Carolina on Friday. I began my day in Gastonia where I visited the CaroMont Regional Medical Center. While there I met with hospital leaders and was then led on a tour of the their recently renovated emergency department.

After spending the afternoon meeting with constituents at my Gastonia office, I headed over to the Sally's YMCA in Denver where I ran in the Mission Miles 5K. This race, which takes place on the Carolina Thread Trail, benefits the Sally's YMCA Annual Support Campaign. It was a great way to spend a beautiful North Carolina evening.

Proud to Support - Efforts to Fight Zika

Last week I provided an update on the House's work fighting the Zika virus. This week that work continued with passage of H.R. 897, the Zika Vector Control Act. This bill removes unnecessary barriers established by the federal government and makes it easier for local and state governments to spray and ultimately kill the carriers of Zika: mosquitoes. The Centers for Disease Control has stated that 'vector control and surveillance' are keys to fighting this dangerous virus and H.R. 897 will enhance those efforts. What I Have Been Reading - Veterans Edition

VA secretary: Disney doesn't measure wait times, so why should VA?

Washington Examiner

Shocking and appalling comments from the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs this week. Besides being wrong, it is unconscionable that the man charged with ensuring care for our nation's heroes would compare that service to wait times at an amusement park. Long waits at the VA have cost lives and these comments again highlight the lack of seriousness on the part of the VA's leadership in tackling the significant issues the Department faces.

Thousands of Living Vets Declared Dead and Lost Benefits in Past Five Years

The Wall Street Journal

While excessive wait times have received much of the attention, failures at the Department of Veterans Affairs do not stop there. The story above is another example of mismanagement and incompetence we've sadly come to expect from the VA bureaucrats in Washington. If you are a veteran or know of a veteran who has faced these problems, please reach out to my office and we will ensure this issues is resolved.

Vietnam Veteran reunited with lost service medals, ribbons

WJZY - Fox 46

One of the highlights of this job is helping local veterans obtain medals and commendations for their service that have either gone missing or they never received. Recently I helped a Cleveland County veteran do just that. Thank you Corporal McKenzie for your dedicated service in defense of our nation. If you are a veteran or know of one who is missing medals, please contact my office for assistance.
