Recognizing NC-10's Teachers and Students

This past week was National Teacher Appreciation Week so it was fitting that I began my week visiting North Carolina's 2016 Teacher of the Year, Bobbie Cavnar. Two weeks ago, I spoke on the House floor recognizing Mr. Cavnar--a British Literature teacher at Belmont's South Point High School--for his tremendous accomplishment. This week, I visited him in his classroom to present him with a framed copy of the Congressional Record which included my remarks recognizing him.

Later that afternoon, I headed to Gastonia's Highland School of Technology where I met with the school's SIFMA Stock Market Challenge Team. This group of students finished fifth in a national stock market simulation game. Led by business teacher Dan Froehlich, this was Highland's first time participating in the challenge. You can read more about the team here.

Announcing the Winners of the 2016 Art Contest

Congratulations to the two Tenth District winners of the 2016 Congressional Art Competition: Gaston Day School's Lily Reed and Maiden High School's Zong Shia Yang. Lily, a junior at Gaston Day, was selected by the Tenth District's judges as the overall winner for her work 'Donkey in Lights' which can be seen below. Her work will be prominently displayed in the US Capitol for the next year. Additionally Lily will be invited to Washington to be recognized alongside each Congressional district's winners.

Zong, a senior at Maiden High, was the People's Choice winner after her artwork '1976'--which can be seen below--received the most likes on my Facebook page.

Congratulations to both of the Tenth District's winners! You can read more about both students here. Thanks as well to the other 37 Tenth District students who submitted works for consideration. Each of their works can be seen by visiting my Facebook page here.

Innovation Initiative Forum

A few weeks ago, I shared details of a House initiative I'm jointly leading with House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California called the Innovation Initiative. The goal of this effort is to find bipartisan, common-sense ways that Congress can make our government more efficient, accountable, and ensure it best serves our bosses, the American people. Whether its streamlining paperwork at the VA or my focus on making it easier for small businesses and entrepreneurs to access capital, our goal is to bring the federal government into the 21st century. Learn more about the Innovation Initiative here.

As part of the Innovation Initiative, Majority Leader McCarthy and I recently hosted a Forum event to discuss the Initiative and our plans to bring an innovative mindset to government and make it work better for all Americans. Click on the image below to see a video recap of the Forum.

What I Have Been Reading

Gaston County will be well represented at Summer Olympics

Gaston Gazette

We are now less than 100 days away from the start of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Tenth District will be well represented in Rio as the story above details. Two Gaston County residents--Casey Eichfeld of Mount Holly and Michal Smolen of Gastonia--will be competing in the Games whitewater competitions. Best of luck to both Casey and Michal this summer!

Study: Businesses Are Opting for Freelancers to Dodge Health Care Fees

Entrepreneur

Another week and another bad headline for Obamacare. The story above outlines how many businesses are now resorting to using freelance workers who lack long-term job security because of added health care costs related to the President's healthcare law. This is troubling but unsurprising development which further highlights the urgent need for a full repeal of this broken law.

Several local events planned in celebration of the National Day of Prayer

WLOS

It was great to see so many western North Carolinians celebrating the National Day of Prayer on Thursday. This year marked the 65th National Day of Prayer. Prayer is such a powerful force that can bring all Americans together regardless of their faiths. It is wonderful to see it celebrated here in western NC and across the country.
