Remembering Those Lost in Orlando

Like so many other Americans, I awoke a week ago today to news of the horrific terrorist attack on the nightclub in Florida. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims, their families, and the entire Orlando community as they mourn this tragedy. I also commend the first responders who saved lives with their quick response to the attack.

Sunday's attack marks a frightening new reality in our fight against terrorism and radical Islam. This was the largest loss of life in a terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11. Its clear more must be done to confront the threat posed by ISIS and those that sympathize with their depravity. Last week, House Republicans unveiled a national security strategy with 67 ideas to help keep America safe. You can learn more about that plan here. As we consider solutions to confront this threat, we must not forget all those lost. My prayers continue to be with all those impacted.

A Better Way

After eight years of President Obama's leadership we have an economy that continues to struggle, a broken healthcare system, and less security at home and abroad. Fortunately there is a better way forward and in the last two weeks, House Republicans have begun to outline that with our A Better Way policy agenda. Thus far we've unveiled detailed plans on national security, poverty, the Constitution, and the economy. On Tuesday, I helped launch the Better Way on the economy at a press conference with House leaders on the West Front of the Capitol Complex. You can view video from that event by clicking here or on the image below. My comments begin at the 11:40 mark in the video. You can learn more about the entire A Better Way agenda by visiting abetterway.speaker.gov.

Two Bills to Create Jobs & Grow the Economy

Our economy is not where it should be this far into the recovery. Just last month we experienced the worst jobs report in six years and media reports have highlighted the plight of small businesses who are struggling to get lending from traditional financial institutions. In March, I introduced two bills to address this problem and this week, both of those bills passed the House Financial Services Committee in a bipartisan manner.

My bills both deal with innovative new forms of capital formation: crowdfunding and angel investing. Both harness new technologies to allow entrepreneurs and small businesses greater access to the capital they so desperately need to grow their businesses and create good-paying jobs. Click here to learn more about these two bills--The Fix Crowdfunding Act and the Supporting America's Innovators Act--and to see video of my testimony at the markup Wednesday. Additionally, you can click the image below for a quick video describing why we must pass these bills into law.

What I Have Been Reading

Charlotte-area county sees top wage growth among nation's largest

Charlotte Business Journal

Great news for Catawba County as the area saw wages grow at the ninth-quickest pace in the nation during the fourth quarter of 2015. While the economy and job market have continued to struggle across much of the nation, it is positive to see the wage growth at home here in western North Carolina.

House passes bills to combat radicalization of Americans by terrorists

USA Today

While the House mourned those lost in Orlando, we also took action to help prevent future attacks like it. I was proud to support a bipartisan package of three bills that combat the radicalization of Americans by terrorists. Both the Orlando attack and last December's attack in San Bernardino, California were perpetrated by American citizens who had become radicalized by ISIS terrorists overseas. We must work to prevent this from happening ever again.

House Votes to Ban IRS from Requiring Nonprofit Donor Lists

The Wall Street Journal

The IRS's targeting of conservative groups for greater scrutiny because of their ideological beliefs was one of the greatest abuses by a federal agency we have seen. We must ensure this never happens again. This week, the House acted to ensure that is the case. With my support, the House passed legislation banning the IRS from requiring non-profits to list their donors which will prevent anyone to be targeted because of their giving.
