Congressman McHenry Weekly Update

Happy Easter!

Hallelujah, He is risen! Giulia, Cecelia, Rese, and I wish all of you a very blessed Easter. As we celebrate this important and sacred holiday with our family and friends here in the Tenth District and all across the country, remember those who are not here with us today and the sacrifices they make for our freedom. The brave men and women of our armed forces and our law enforcement are spending this time away from their family to keep us safe so we can celebrate this very special day.

Combatting the Opioid Crisis

The opioid epidemic is devastating families and communities all across the country. In the past year alone 11.8 million Americans over the age of 12 have misused prescription opioids or heroin. We must take action to end this crisis. Recently, the White House created two new websites to help combat the opioid crisis. The first site, opioids.gov, provides valuable information allowing us to better understand the causes of the crisis while also learning more about the steps the Trump Administration has taken in the battle against the opioid epidemic. Click here or on the image below to learn more.

The second site the White House created is called, the Crisis Next Door, and is a platform where Americans are coming together to share their stories on how opioid addiction has affected their lives. Click here or on the image below to watch videos submitted by former addicts, first responders, and families with loved ones suffering from addiction. You can also share your own story of how you have been impacted by this crisis that has ravaged our communities.

What I Have Been Reading

Asheville's Peter Ripmaster wins 1,000 mile Iditarod Trail Race, arrives home Tuesday

Asheville Citizen-Times

I was very impressived to hear about Asheville's Peter Ripmaster who recently completed the 1,000 mile Iditarod race—a race that is traditionally a competition between teams of sled dogs—on foot. This impressive feat was completed in just 26 days making him the winner of the 2018 Iditarod Trail Race. Congratulations Peter!

Gastonia officers awarded for busting human traffickers

Gaston Gazette

Two Gastonia Police Department police officers, Adam Wilson and Heather House, are a great example of officers going above and beyond to protect us. They will be receiving honorable mentions accolades at the National Association of Police Organizations TOP COPS Awards ceremony to commend them for their work to help stop suspected human traffickers and save a woman's life. I am very thankful for these brave police officers and everything our law enforcement does to keep our communities safe.
