Congressman McHenry Weekly Update

Happy Mother's Day

Please join me in wishing all the wonderful mothers throughout western North Carolina and the Tenth District a very happy Mother's Day. I would especially like to recognize my beloved wife Giulia who serves as an amazing mother and role model to our two daughters, Cecelia and Rese. Thank you to all the moms for everything you do! to make our lives better!

Demanding the Release of Pastor Brunson

Recently, I led a bipartisan group of 154 Representatives in sending a letter to the President of Turkey demanding the release of Pastor Andrew Brunson. In our letter we denounced the wrongful imprisonment of Pastor Brunson, who is originally from the Tenth District town of Black Mountain and has been held for over eighteen months, and call for justice to be done so Pastor Brunson can be reunited with his family. Click here or on the image below to read the letter we sent to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

On Wednesday, I joined Asheville’s WLOS to discuss the letter I sent demanding the release of Pastor Brunson. I also had the chance to share my thoughts on President Trump pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal. I agree with President Trump that it was a bad deal that did little to hold Iran accountable for their hostile actions towards America and our allies. Getting Washington Bureaucrats Out of Auto Lending

With the help of Acting Director Mick Mulvaney, we are reining in the most powerful and least accountable government agency, the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection. On Tuesday, the House passed S.J. Res 57, which stops an auto-lending power grab that is not only harmful and costly to consumers but is also specifically prohibited by Dodd Frank. Today’s action will help reduce borrowing costs for western North Carolinians when they go to buy their next car. Click here to read more about why we need this resolution to remove this misguided and harmful CFPB rule.

What I Have Been Reading

Ingles turns in second-quarter sales, earnings gains

Supermarket News

Every day there are more and more examples of the positive impacts the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is having on businesses and families around the country, including right here in the Tenth District. Ingles will use their tax reform savings to invest in their stores and help better serve the people of western North Carolina.

Donald Trump pulls the United States out of the nuclear deal with Iran, renews sanctions

USA Today

I applaud President Trump’s decision to pull out of the Iran deal. It was a bad deal that did not do nearly enough to rein in the bad acts of the Iranian regime. It simply delayed their nuclear program while also providing the regime with a huge financial windfall. Further it did nothing to hold the Iranian regime accountable for the countless Americans and American allies who have died at the hands of Iranian proxies.

Airbnb: Asheville is 'most hospitable' U.S. city, ahead of Portland, St. Louis

The Asheville Citizen-Times

Airbnb recently named Asheville the most hospitable U.S. city based on the reviews guests left after their stays. It is great to see that people across the country are finding out what a wonderful place western North Carolina is to visit.
