Honoring the Life and Legacy of an American Hero

This week I joined with the rest of the country in honoring the life and legacy of President George H.W. Bush. President Bush was a patriot who dedicated his life to serving our nation and I was humbled to have the opportunity to pay respects to this great leader, first in the Capitol Rotunda with my daughter Cecelia and later at the funeral service in the National Cathedral.

At Wednesday's service we heard the deeply moving words of his son President George W. Bush and others whose lives he had touched. Click here or on the image below to watch Wednesday's beautiful service.

Remembering Pearl Harbor

On December 7, 1941 our nation was attacked. We will never forget the American men and women who lost their lives at Pearl Harbor. It is also a time to remember the brave men and women have defended our nation throughout the years against those who threatened the freedoms and values we hold dear. Please join me in honoring all the brave American servicemen who perished on that fateful day.

The Tenth District Comes to DC

On Tuesday, I had the opportunity to get a sneak peak of the UNC Asheville Singers performance at Walter Reed Army Medical Center when they stopped by my DC office. Cecilia and I loved hearing you sing!!

On Thursday, I was blessed to pray with Pastor Andrew Brunson, his family, and some of my colleagues in the House and Senate. Pastor Brunson, who is originally from Black Mountain, North Carolina, was wrongfully imprisoned by the Turkish government for over two years. He was finally able to return to his family this October and I am so thankful for his safe return. Click here to watch the speech I delivered on the House Floor calling for his release. To read the letter I sent with 154 of my House colleagues to President Erdogan of Turkey demanding his release please click here.

US Marine Corps planes involved in deadly midair collision off coast of Japan

CNN

Please join me in praying for the family and loved ones of the Marines involved in Wednesday's deadly midair collision off the coast of Japan. The brave men and women of the U.S. military put their lives on the line every day to help keep our nation secure and I am deeply saddened by this loss.

Asheville man remembers time President George H.W. Bush visited his home

WLOS

In 1992, Roy Harris invited President Bush to his home to come talk to his young daughters about the importance of education. A couple of months later that is exactly what the President did. This touching story is just one of the many ways President Bush will be remembered not only as a great leader but also as a kind and decent man.
