Congressman McHenry Weekly Update

A Busy Week in the Tenth District

I enjoyed the last week of the August district work period visiting schools, businesses, and hearing from people here in the Tenth District. I started my week by visiting students, teachers, and administrators at Newton Conover Middle School in Catawba County as they began the new school year. I was also honored to meet North Carolina and National School Resource Officer of the Year, Sergeant Danny Baker. Learn more about Sergeant Danny Baker and the incredible work he does for Newton Conover Middle by clicking here.

Later that day I had the opportunity to visit Sarstedt where I enjoyed learning about the innovative products for the medical industry they manufacture right here in Catawba County.

I was pleased to end my day in Catawba County by presenting a $750,000 Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant check to the Manufacturing Solutions Center in Conover. The award funds the Leveraging Resources for Cutting Edge Innovation and Entrepreneurship Project, focusing on later-stage innovations, taking them from proof-of-concept and lab demonstrations to the marketplace.

On Thursday, I had an amazing experience with the dedicated volunteers who prepare and deliver Meals on Wheels in Gaston County. Even better, I was able to chat with participants in the program and even go out and help deliver meals.

Later that day, I was honored to receive the Champion for Healthy Seniors Award from the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease. I also met with representatives of the coalition to discuss healthcare issues.

I also want to thank developer Nathan Kirby for a great tour of the final work being done to open the new Esquire Hotel in Gastonia's historic Lawyers Building. This is a tremendous historic preservation project that will help bring more dining and hotel space to downtown Gastonia.

I ended Thursday with NC Forest Ranger Laura Shidal who gave a great tour of Mountain Island Educational State Forest. Located in Lincoln and Gaston Counties, this State Forest is a nature preserve featuring abundant plant and animal life. Although it is not yet open to the public, the forest will feature classes and exhibits designed to educate schoolchildren, forestry professionals and the general public about the importance of North Carolina's forest health.

On Friday, it was nice to head to Lincoln County to visit East Lincoln Middle School where I once again had a chance to talk to students, teachers, and administrators as the school year begins.

I ended my busy week with a tour of Fresnius Medical Care in Lincolnton. Fresenius Medical Care is the largest provider of dialysis services and products in the world. In the Tenth District alone, they have 11 dialysis clinics, 796 patients, and 190 employees.

Hearing About the Issues Important to You

One of my favorite parts about being home is the opportunity to hear from you and the issues that matter most to you. It was great to return to my alma mater, Belmont Abbey, to speak at the Gaston Regional Chamber of Commerce's First Thursday Focus and take questions from local community and business leaders.

I also had a chance to visit with the Gastonia Rotary Club on Thursday. There I heard a wonderful presentation by Gaston Gazette reporter Will MacDonald.

On Friday, I was honored to attend the Lincolnton - Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce Legislative Luncheon where NC Sen. Ted Alexander, NC Rep. Jason Saine and I shared updates on what is happening in Raleigh and Washington and talked to those who attended about the issues most important to them.

What I Have Been Reading

Hurricane Dorian triggers sever flooding in Outer Banks; supplies airlifted to Ocracoke Island

The Weather Channel

Please join me in continuing to pray for all who have been impacted by Hurricane Dorian from the Bahamas to our neighbors in eastern North Carolina. Our thoughts are with these folks as they begin the rebuilding process. With hurricane season ongoing, encourage family and friends to visit www.ready.gov for important safety tips for everyone who might be impacted by future storms.

She evacuated to Iredell from South Carolina - and took some time with evacuees of the four-legged variety

Statesville Record and Landmark

It is always great to hear about western North Carolina communities coming together to help others across the country when disaster strikes. As Hurricane Dorian battered our coasts, a shelter in western North Carolina opened its doors to some of our four-legged neighbors so they would have a safe place to wait out the storm.
