Congressman McHenry Weekly Update

A Missed Bipartisan Opportunity

Last week, the House Committee on Financial Services held a mark-up of five pieces of legislation. Unfortunately, it was a missed opportunity with Democrats offering bills with very little bipartisan collaboration. I discussed some of these missed opportunities during my opening statement at the beginning of the mark-up on Tuesday. Click here or on the image below to watch. You can learn about some of the bills we discussed during the mark-up last week by clicking here.

Fulfilling Promises to the Tenth District

In the Tenth District, 6,500 manufacturing jobs were created in just two years. The American economy is booming and we are seeing the benefits right here in western North Carolina. However, Congress has more work that needs to be done. This Congress, I have taken on a new role as the Ranking Republican on the Financial Services Committee. This role will help me continue my work helping families and small businesses in western North Carolina. Click here or on the image below to read about what I hope to accomplish in the two years ahead so we can continue to see lives improve here in the Tenth District.

Internship Opportunities

My office is always accepting resumes from students interested in interning in one of my offices here in North Carolina or in Washington, DC. Through an internship in the Tenth District, students will have the opportunity to assist district staff in either Gastonia or Hickory as they help to provide services to Tenth District constituents. Former NASCAR driver and UNC Charlotte student Justin Fontaine is currently interning in the Gastonia district office. This summer, he will be interning in my DC office. There he will have the opportunity to learn more about the legislative process. You can click here to learn more about Justin's experience. The Gastonia and Hickory district offices accepthigh school and college students sixteen years and older. If you are interested in applying please call one of my offices. What I Have Been Reading

House fails to overturn Trump's veto on emergency declaration repeal

NBC News

On Tuesday, House Democrats not only failed to override the President’s veto but have proven once again that they would rather play political games than work with the President and Republicans to find a solution to help address the urgent crisis at our southern border. I am proud to continue to stand with our President and work to stem the flow of illicit drugs and illegal immigrants into our country so we can help resolve this crisis and protect the American people.

74 years later, Gaston Marines remember Iwo Jima

Gaston Gazette

On March 26, 1945, Americans were victorious at the Battle of Iwo Jima. I am thankful for heroes like Mack Drake and Joe Tedder of Gastonia and the brave sacrifices they made for our country. Please join me in honoring all of those who served and have fought to defend our nation.

Gastonia Police Officer helps guide youth in careers

Gaston Gazette

Just like students can pursue internship opportunities through my office, young people in Gastonia have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in law enforcement. The Explorer program at the Gastonia Police Department has been led by Officer Amy Hawkins and she has seen over thirty of the program's members pursue a career in law enforcement. I always enjoy reading these great stories of the brave men and women who help to protect the Tenth District going above and beyond to give back to the community. Thank you for your dedication Officer Hawkins!
