Obamacare Repeal Veto Override Vote
When Republicans gained control of both the House and the Senate in 2014, we committed to sending a full repeal of Obamacare to President Obama's desk. In January, we did just that as we coupled an Obamacare repeal with a measure that cut all federal funding to Planned Parenthood. Unsurprisingly, President Obama vetoed this bill.
This week, the House voted--with my support--to override President Obama's veto. Regrettably, this override vote failed. While I'm disappointed our effort was unsuccessful, it is important to recognize the significance of sending the Obamacare repeal and defunding of Planned Parenthood to President Obama's desk. These efforts proved what can be accomplished should a Republican be elected to the White House this November. My full statement on this week's vote is below.

Receiving a Conservative Achievement Award
I am honored to have recently received the Conservative Achievement Award from the American Conservative Union (ACU). I was presented with the award in my office by ACU Chairman Matt Schlapp. The ACU--which is the host of the annual CPAC conference--is recognized as the 'gold standard' of Congressional ratings and I'm proud to have earned a lifetime rating of over 95% from the group. The ACU shares my belief in the conservative principles of individual liberty and small government and I remain fully committed to defending those principles each day in Congress. You read more about the award presentation here.

Ending Operation Choke Point
Operation Choke Point was little more than a thinly veiled attempt by the Obama Administration to target legal businesses--such as pawn shops and gun and ammunition merchants--with which they philosophically disagreed. When I first learned about businesses being targeted, I began to investigate and, in July of 2014, I chaired the first Congressional hearing demanding answers from Washington bureaucrats as to why this illegal operation was allowed to happen.
This week, I was proud to support legislation in the House which ended Operation Choke Point and further ensures that this type of illegal operation never happens again. H.R. 766, the Financial Institution Customer Protection Act of 2015 brings important reforms to the banking system which require greater transparency of how our federal government oversees banks. Operation Choke Point should have never began in the first place but, having investigated it, I'm pleased to see reforms put in place to ensure it does not happen again. Learn more about my efforts to stop Operation Choke Point by clicking the image below.

What I Have Been Reading |

They're crazy about the Panthers in Denver -- North Carolina, that is
Los Angeles Times
As a resident of Denver (of the east) it has been amazing to see the attention our community has received both near, this article in the Hickory Daily Record, and far, the article above in the LA Times. As both articles make clear, Denver is fully behind the Carolina Panthers as they take on the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl this evening. Good luck to the Panthers and Keep Pounding!
Obama's $10 tax proposal would cost motorists
USA Today
Over the last seven years, we have seen plenty of terrible ideas originate from President Obama's White House but this might be the worst. A $10 tax on each barrel of oil would guarantee increased prices at the pump for every American. Falling gas prices have been one of the few bright spots in the Obama economy but this would almost certainly bring those to an end. While this proposal has no chance of becoming law, it is amazing to see our President continue to push his leftist climate agenda at the expense of the middle class.
House Speaker Paul Ryan Knocks Culture's 'Growing Impatience With Prayer'
The Christian Post
On Thursday, I joined many of my Congressional colleagues in attending the annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington. This year, I was honored to welcome Tami Fitzgerald as my guest. Tami is the Executive Director of the North Carolina Values Coalition and has been a staunch defender of the right to life and traditional values in our state. It was a pleasure to have Tami join me for this important event.
House Passes Bill Restricting Obama on Iran Sanctions Again
Newsweek
In recent weeks, we've seen the Iranian regime illegal test a ballistic missile as well as capture and detain ten American sailors. This actions are unacceptable and on Tuesday the House passed important legislation to keep pressure on Iran by restricting President Obama's ability to ease sanctions on the regime. You can read my full statement on Tuesday's vote by clicking here.
