Congressman McHenry Weekly Update

Happy Independence Day

Happy Independence Day! As you gather with friends and family across western North Carolina to celebrate our nation, don't forget those that make it possible. From the military men and women defending our freedom overseas to the police officers and first responders who keep us safe at home, we are blessed as a nation to have so many Americans willing to sacrifice to protect all that we hold dear. Take a moment to watch my Independence Day greeting by clicking the image below. God Bless America!

Busy Week at Home in Western NC

With the House out of session in observance of Independence Day, I was back home in western North Carolina for a full week of events. I began Tuesday in Buncombe County where I presented a grant check to the Skyland Fire Department. The grant--which you can read more about here--will be used to purchase more turnout gear for the department.

I spent lunchtime Tuesday speaking to the Black Mountain Rotary Club. I also had the honor of leading the installation of the Club's new officers.

In the afternoon, I headed into Asheville where I visited The Collider. There I learned about their mission of bringing business and science together to confront the challenges facing our nation.

I wrapped up Tuesday visiting the New Belgium Brewing Company's Asheville facility. There I visited the recently opened tap room and toured the facility which will be opening to the public soon.

After a series of morning meetings at my Black Mountain office Wednesday, I headed to the Eliada Home in Asheville for a lunch time meeting of the Council of Independent Business Owners.

Following my lunchtime remarks, I headed to Candler where I visited Wicked Weed Brewing's production facility.

Thursday I began my day in Cleveland County visiting the construction site for the Kings Mountain Energy Center which, when completed, will be one of the cleanest and most efficient generating facilities in our state.

Next I headed to Rutherford County for a lunchtime meeting with the Rutherford County Commissioners.

Later I toured the Purple Martin Greenway in Rutherfordton with Mayor Jimmy Dancy and Town Manager Doug Barrick.

I wrapped up my day by presenting an American flag flown above the Capitol to the Rutherford County Courthouse and Clerk of Court Steve Owens.

Benghazi Committee Releases Findings

Nearly four years ago, four brave Americans died in a preventable tragedy in Benghazi, Libya. In 2014 House Republicans answered the call of the American people and established a special investigative committee to find out why these Americans died and what can be done to prevent a tragedy like this from ever occurring again. This week, Chairman Trey Gowdy and members of the select committee released the first part of their report on what happened that day. Click here to read that full report or click on the image below to see Chairman Gowdy and other members of the committee discuss their findings.

What I Have Been Reading

Supreme Court Strikes Down Abortion Restrictions in Texas

NPR

Like so many Americans, I was disgusted last week to see the Supreme Court strike down Texas' common sense laws aimed at making the horror of abortion safer for women. While this decision was a disappointment and set back for the the pro-life movement, I remain full committed to fighting for and defending life.

House Leaders to Vote on Crowdfunding, Angel Investing

The Wall Street Journal

Tomorrow will be an important day in the House as we prepare to vote on two of my bills to help small businesses and entrepreneurs access capital to grow their businesses and create jobs. My bills on angel investing and crowdfunding will both be receiving votes in the House and, last week, I spoke with the WSJ about each.

James Worthy still following mom's rules

Gaston Gazette

I recently saw this great story in the Gazette about Gastonia's James Worthy and the scholarship he recently created to pay tribute to his late mother, Gladys Thompson Worthy. James--who like me is a graduate of Ashbrook High--created the Gladys Thompson Worthy Scholarship which is awarded to six Gaston County students pursuing degrees in health sciences.
