Honoring a 10th District Public Servant

Ellenboro Alderman Mike Rhyne was a dedicated public servant who helped put this small Rutherford County town on the map. He was instrumental in launching their annual 'Ellenboro Big Day' celebration and played a leading role in transforming the train depot into the town's history museum. Sadly, Alderman Rhyne died suddenly last month. This week, I took to the House floor to pay tribute to Mike Rhyne and his years of dedicated service to Ellenboro and Rutherford County. Two Bills to Bring Greater Innovation to Finance

Like most sectors, new technologies and innovations have revolutionized the financial services industry. These advances make lending easier and more convenient for consumers and small businesses but for them to truly succeed, we must ensure our regulatory framework encourages continued advances. That is why, this week, I introduced two bills that would help begin that effort. The Protecting Consumers' Access to Credit Act of 2016 and the IRS Data Verification Modernization Act of 2016 both support the expansion of safe and affordable credit through innovative methods. I spoke with the Wall Street Journal about both of these bills. You can read that interview here. Additionally, you can click here or on the image below to learn more about this legislation.

Protecting Americans Right to Conscience

Never should any American be forced to choose between following their conscience or obeying the law. Yet--when it comes to abortion--that is exactly what the Obama Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services are asking medical professionals to do. This week, the House passed legislation to right this wrong and ensure that all Americans have their right of conscience protected. Wednesday, we passed the Conscience Protection Act of 2016 which re-affirms long-standing federal policy that doctors, nurses, and hospitals cannot be forced to perform or participate in abortions if it violates their religious beliefs. This bill does not alter existing laws regarding access to abortion, but rather protects the right of all Americans to live by the tenets of their individual faith. What I Have Been Reading

Could she put us on the tech map?

Gaston Gazette

Promising story from the Gazette about the progress made at Gaston County's new incubator project. Incubators are places where entrepreneurs and small businesses can work and grow their ideas or companies. I look forward to meeting with leaders of the project soon to learn more about their efforts trying to grow business and create jobs in the area.

House passes bill to curb federal agencies' power

The Hill

For too long we have allowed the executive branch to create an administrative state. This week that changed as the House passed the Separation of Powers Restoration Act. This bill overturns the so-called 'Chevron deference' which says that courts must defer to executive agencies interpretations of ambiguous statutes. This is an important bill that will rein in the regulatory state and help reestablish the separation of powers as the Framers of our Constitution originally intended it.

Four decades of experience drives Southern Charm Winery

Lincoln Times-News

The Tenth District is well known for our excellent craft beers and has recently received more recognition for our local spirits as well. The story above highlights a growing wine industry too, focusing on Lincolnton's Southern Charm Winery. First opened in 2008, Southern Charm is run by Maiden residents Dwight and Carolyn Ramseur.
