Recognizing a Retiring Community Leader

The economic turmoil of the latter years of the last decade posed a significant challenge to our western North Carolina communities but thanks to strong leadership at the local level, we were able to persevere. One of those leaders was Catawba County Chamber of Commerce President Danny Hearn, who recently announced he was retiring. Danny played a leading role guiding Catawba County through the economic downturn and the turnaround that followed. He's been a longtime advocate for small businesses in our area and his contributions to the Catawba County community will be missed. Recently, I spoke on the House floor to honor Danny and thank him for his many years of strong leadership. WLOS's Connect to Congress

With a busy final week in the House, I took some time out of my day to speak with Asheville's WLOS about the important work I'm doing on behalf of western North Carolina. During our interview, I spoke about my recently passed legislation to assist victims of North Carolina's forced sterilization program, the workshop I hosted for Tenth District law enforcement agencies focusing on the heroin crisis, and, also, the recent tragic shootings involving police officers. You can watch my complete interview by clicking here or on the image below.

Working Group on Women in the 21st Century Workforce

There is no question women in our country face greater barriers to professional growth and success than their male counterparts. Recently, I was honored to join an effort to address these challenges as House Republicans launched a working group on Women in the 21st Century Workforce. This effort will seek to examine the obstacles women face and how they can be overcome. The working group is led by my colleague Martha McSally of Arizona. Before coming to Congress, Representative McSally was the first female fighter pilot in our nation's history making her well-equipped to lead our work. You can read more about the working group here, watch a video introducing it here, and visit its website here.

What I Have Been Reading

Baton Rouge readies for funerals of 3 slain police officers

Fox News

It is unconscionable that twice in the last few weeks we would be mourning the lives of police officers killed in an ambush attack but that is sadly the case. My prayers go out to the three officers in Baton Rouge who, a week ago today, were killed while doing their jobs protecting the community. This horrific violence against our men and women in blue must stop.

Impromptu hoops with kids earn Gastonia Police new fans

Gaston Gazette

With all the recent violence involving police officers, heartwarming stories like the one above are needed more than ever. Thank you to the Gastonia Police Department and all of the law enforcement agencies throughout the Tenth District who serve as role models and leaders in our communities all while keeping us safe and secure.

Hatching Asheville's startup ecosystem

Asheville Citizen-Times

Throughout my time in Congress, I've worked to find ways to improve capital formation for small businesses and startups while also working to improve our business climate to encourage their growth. It is great to see those efforts expanding into western North Carolina with the recent addition of an incubator in Gaston County and now Hatch opening in Asheville.
