Congressman McHenry Weekly Update

Coronavirus Resources

As the coronavirus continues to spread in our state, it is imperative that we all make efforts to slow the spread of this dangerous disease. Watch this video from the White House for some tips on what you can do to help reduce the spread of the coronavirus in our western North Carolina communities. We must work together to bring an end to this pandemic. Click here or on the image below to watch.

My offices have implemented short-term operating procedures that are aimed at helping to mitigate the further spread of the coronavirus and to follow the recommendations of the CDC that we should practice social distancing when technology and resources allow. There will be no in-person meetings at any of the Washington, Black Mountain, Gastonia, or Hickory offices.  While the temporary operating procedures are in effect, technology will allow staff to work remotely while continuing to assist Tenth District constituents.  Tenth District constituents with questions on casework are encouraged to contact district office staff through my website.  All other questions or concerns can be directed to Congressman McHenry through this link. If you would like additional information on the coronavirus please visit coronavirus.gov or click here or on the image below. Visit my coronavirus webpage by clicking here.

What We're Doing to Combat the Coronavirus

American families need economic relief in the face of the coronavirus and are counting on their government to act quickly in this time of extraordinary need. In an effort to combat the impact of the coronavirus, Congress has already passed two bills that have been signed in to law by President Trump. This week the Senate announced additional legislation aimed at continuing the fight against the coronavirus. I applaud the Senate’s collaborative approach thus far and appreciate, the input they’ve taken from the House. We will continue to work with them as this package is refined.

In addition to his national emergency declaration, President Trump this week invoked the Defense Production Act in response to this crisis. This was an aggressive and necessary move by the President. Invoking the Defense Production Act will help to help expedite the production of the resources we need in the fight against coronavirus. Click here for some key facts on how the Defense Production Act can be used to confront the coronavirus.

In my role as  the Ranking Republican on the House Financial Services Committee, I am working with our financial regulators and the Trump Administration as they closely monitor and respond to the coronavirus. Committee Republicans and I are working with these officials to maintain the safety and soundness of our economy and financial institutions during this public health crisis. Click here for the Financial Services Committee Republicans coronavirus resource page and for updates on our efforts to mitigate the economic impact of coronavirus.

We're In This Together

Please join me in praying for our nation’s doctors, nurses, first responders, and public safety officers who are on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic. Here in the Tenth Disctrict and all across the country they’re tirelessly working to keep us safe and healthy.

Our small businesses play a vital role in our communities here in the Tenth District and all across the country. I encourage everyone to do what they can to support small businesses as together we confront the impact the coronavirus is having in our homes and on main street. Below are some tips on how you can support local businesses during these challenging times.

What I Have Been Reading

Former NASCAR driver and Asheville native helping others get back on track

WLOS

This is a great story about Asheville native Justin Fontaine. I had the pleasure of getting to know Justin when he interned first in my Washington office and later in my Gastonia office. It is inspiring to see his efforts to give back to his community. Thank you for your service to western North Carolina Justin!

The Miracle of Hickory

Our State

During this time of national uncertainty, this story is a wonderful reminder of the importance of community in the face of a crisis. In the 1940s, there was a polio outbreak in western North Carolina, but the Hickory community came together to help and support one another during this emergency.

WWII 30th Infantry Division awarded Presidential Unit Citation

The North Carolina National Guard

This week, President Trump announced the 30th Infantry Division of the North Carolina National Guard will be awarded the Presidential Unit Citation in recognition of the major role they played in defeating the Germans at the Battle of Mortain during WWII. The Old Hickory Division as it was known, ensured Allied victory in the Normandy Campaign, shaping the course of history. Congratulations to the North Carolina National Guard and the 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team, who carry on the legacy of the 30th Infantry Division.
