Congressman McHenry Weekly Update -     A Week Back Home in NC-10

A Productive Start to 2017

We are now halfway through 2017 and, thus far, it has been a very productive year for the House of Representatives. Despite what you may have been hearing from the news media, the House of Representatives has been working hard to improve the lives of the American people. My colleagues and I have passed multiple important bills including the American Health Care Act which repeals and replaces Obamacare, the rollback of many job-killing Obama-era regulations, and vitally important reforms of the VA. For more information on our accomplishments so far this year check out the recap put together by Speaker Ryan which can be seen by clicking here or on the image below.

Helping Out NC-10 Fire Departments

On Thursday I was proud to present the Lowell Fire Department in Gaston County with a grant check received through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG). This grant will help the department purchase equipment to enhance long term safety and health benefits to fire personnel and vehicle rescue equipment that is particularly helpful when responding to large vehicle wrecks. This is the fourth consecutive year the Lowell Fire Department has received a grant through the AFG Program. I enjoyed meeting with the department and thanking them for all they do to keep Lowell safe.

Busy Week at Home in the Tenth District

This week, as Congress observed its Independence Day district work period, I was back home in western North Carolina to celebrate the holiday and meet with folks across the Tenth District. My first stop was at the Walmart Training Academy in Denver where I had the opportunity to sit in on a class.

Next I headed over to Lincolnton where I visited Lincoln County Veterans Services to present a flag to Veterans Service Officer Alex Patton in recognition of his service on the Lincoln County Commission and his work with veterans. I am thankful for men like Alex who are dedicated to improving the lives of local veterans who defended our nation and our freedoms.

Afterwards I stopped by the Lincoln Economic Development Association to discuss economic development issues in Lincoln County.

My final stop on Wednesday was to the ReSource Warehouse in Hickory where I learned more about their mission of providing job skills and career experiences for the women of Safe Harbor, a Christian based shelter for homeless women.

Thursday morning I had the opportunity to meet Noah Empson who is the founder and CEO of Canned, a trash can valet service. Noah is the youngest member inthe Gaston Regional Chamber’s history and was a recipient of the Young Entrepreneur Award. Click here to learn more about Noah’s accomplishments in the Gaston Gazette.

Later on Thursday I met with several groups at my Gastonia District Office. First I met with local agents from the New York Life Insurance Company to discuss tax reform and how it will impact North Carolina. Next, I met a young advocate from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation who came to speak on behalf of loved ones who live with cystic fibrosis.

What I Have Been Reading

The Battle that helped win independence

The Shelby Star

Western North Carolina played a vital role in the fight for our nation’s independence. As a big history buff, I enjoyed this Shelby Star article on how the Kings Mountain National Military Park and reenactors with the Backcountry Militia are helping to ensure we remember an important moment in our nation’s history.

Gastonia honors veterans at July 4th celebration

Gaston Gazette

Citizens of Gastonia had more than one reason to celebrate on July 4th. In addition to Independence Day, the city used the opening ceremony of their July 4th celebrations to recognize local Vietnam veterans and also celebrated the city of Gastonia’s 140th birthday.
