Reforms to Help Small Businesses & Families

Over the past seven years, Dodd-Frank has made life harder and more expensive for American families and small businesses. On Thursday, the House of Representatives began the work of undoing the damage done by this failed law as we passed H.R. 10, the Financial CHOICE Act. This bill removes burdensome Washington mandates that have made it too expensive for American families to access basic financial products. It embraces innovation and encourages the use of new forms of capital formation that will help small businesses grow and create jobs to stimulate economic growth in America’s rural and urban communities.

As Vice Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee I was proud to work closely with Chairman Hensarling and my other colleagues on the committee to draft and pass this important reform to help families and small businesses. Earlier this week I delivered a speech on the House floor about the CHOICE Act, to view video of those remarks click here or on the image below. Additionally, you can see my full statement on the passage of the Financial CHOICE Act by clicking here.

A Productive Start to 2017

2017 has been a busy but productive year for both House Republicans and President Trump. Thus far, the House is the most productive in the modern era, passing 158 bills since the 115th Congress began in January. These bills include the American Health Care Act and the Financial CHOICE Act, bills that undo two of the most disastrous initiatives of the Obama-era, Obamacare and Dodd-Frank. At the White House, President Trump has signed 37 bills into law, placing him above his predecessors. The graphics below, which were produced by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, highlight our productivity compared to previous Congresses.

These accomplishments are just the start. In the coming months, I look forward to continuing my work alongside President Trump and my colleagues in the House and Senate as we improve the lives of the hardworking people of the Tenth District and hardworking Americans all across the country.

A Permanent Bet Mind-Set for Government

Recently, I was one of a number of leaders who were asked by Politico to answer the question, “how can government seed innovation?” My idea: embrace a “permanent beta” mind-set in the federal government. “Permanent beta” is the idea of constant adaption, evolution, and improvement. It ties closely to my work on legislation that brings greater innovation to our existing regulatory structures. The "permanent beta" mind-set has already taken hold in well-known companies like LinkedIn and Amazon and similar ideas have been implemented in countries like the United Kingdom. To read my full piece on the "permanent beta" mind-set click here or on the image below.

What I Have Been Reading

Gowdy picked by GOP steering committee to chair House Oversight panel

Politico

Congratulations to my good friend, Congressman Trey Gowdy (SC-04) on his selection as the next Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Trey is an intelligent, reform-minded conservative and will be an excellent Chairman. I have no doubt he will lead the Committee with the same integrity and fairness he has shown throughout his career. To see my full statement on Trey Gowdy’s selection click here.

House GOP Leaders Schedule More Health Care Votes

Roll Call

This coming week, Republicans will continue our work to replace President Obama’s failed healthcare law as we take action on bills that are part of the third phase of our three phase process to repeal Obamacare. House Republicans are committed to fixing our nation's healthcare system and these bills, combined with the recently-passed American Health Care Act are important parts of this effort.

The Latest: Trump outlines privatizing air traffic control

McClatchy DC

On Monday, I was proud to be at the White House as President Trump announced his plans to reform our nation's air traffic control system. The announcement, which was part of the President's Infrastructure Week, is an important step in the long overdue process of updating our air traffic control system. I look forward to working closely with President Trump and my colleagues in Congress on this much-needed initiative.
