Congressman McHenry Weekly Update

Fulfilling Our Responsibility to Our Troops

In the United States we depend on our troops to protect us from a wide range of threats, from Islamic extremism to North Korea. Unfortunately, due to the previous administration's short comings, a readiness gap has developed in the U.S. military. On Friday, the House of Representatives passed bipartisan legislation to fix that. H.R. 2810, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018 provides our troops with the resources they need to keep our country safe, makes important reforms to the Pentagon to streamline bureaucracy and encourage efficiency, and mandates a complete audit of the Department of Defense to eliminate waste. To read my full statement on the passage of the FY2018 NDAA click here or on the image below.

Obamacare is Failing

The previous Administration promised more affordable health care for all Americans but under Obamacare, the opposite has happened. North Carolina alone has seen skyrocketing premiums and fewer options for healthcare, with the majority of the state now having access to only one insurer. This great video from House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy highlights Obamacare’s failures and outlines the American Health Care Act, House Republicans plan to fix our nation's healthcare system. Combating Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is a horrible practice that has become far too common in the United States. This week the House passed three important bills to combat human trafficking. These bills protect victims, support law enforcement, and address the needs of at risk communities where human trafficking has become common place in our country. Learn more about what the House is doing to stop this despicable practice by clicking here or on the image below.

I was very saddened to hear the tragic news that we lost 16 of our nation’s heroes. Giulia and I continue to pray for these Marines and their families. Please join us in remembering the sacrifices our military makes to defend our freedoms and keep us safe.

Former slave turned business celebrated in Mount Holly

Gaston Gazette

I enjoyed learning more about the incredible story of Ransom Hunter, who is believed to have been the first freed slave to own property in Gaston County. This is a good article on Hunter and those who contributed to having his legacy recognized and educating others on his achievements here in western North Carolina.

Last year I helped in the effort to bring the 2018 World Equestrian Games to Tryon. I can’t imagine a better place for this event and I enjoyed reading about the preparations being made for next year.
