Greeting Our Nation's Heroes

Saturday was a day I will not forget. Cecelia and I had the opportunity to greet World War II and Korean War veterans from the Asheville area who were traveling to Washington on an Honor Flight. The flight was organized by Blue Ridge Honor Flight which brings veterans from our area to Washington to visit the many memorials dedicated to those who have served our nation. It was honor to meet these brave men and women and personally thank them for their service to our nation. You can read more about Blue Ridge Honor Flight and their important mission by clicking here. At that page you can also learn about how you can help volunteer for one of these amazing days.

Remembering Hickory Mayor Rudy Wright

On Thursday, we lost a dedicated public servant who had served our area with distinction with the sudden passing of Hickory Mayor Rudy Wright. Mayor Wright had served as Hickory mayor since 2001 leading the city through challenging and changing economic times. Throughout his service, he remained the city's biggest advocate and booster. Mayor Wright had a deep love for Hickory and it showed throughout his tenure. Giulia and I send our thoughts and prayers to his beloved wife Donna and the entire Wright family as they mourn their loss. My full statement on Mayor Wright's passing can be found here or by clicking the image below.

Celebrating Our Men and Women in Blue

This week is National Police Week, a time to celebrate the service and sacrifice of all our men and women in blue. Tomorrow is Peace Officers Memorial Day, a date that was designated by President Kennedy in 1962 as the day we as a nation remember all of the police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

This Peace Officers Memorial Day is especially somber in the Tenth District as it will be the first when we remember Shelby Police Officer Tim Brackeen who was tragically killed in the line of duty last September. At the time, I spoke on the House floor in remembrance of Officer Brackeen, remarks which can be found here. The Tenth District is blessed with numerous dedicated police officers, just like Officer Brackeen, who put their lives on the line to keep us safe each and every day.

What I Have Been Reading

The Pre-Existing Lie

National Review

Since the House passed the American Health Care Act repealing Obamacare last week, there has been a great deal of misinformation about what the bill does and does not do for those who have pre-existing conditions. The piece above does an excellent job of setting the record straight that yes, the AHCA protects healthcare of Americans who suffer from pre-existing conditions.

Despite critics' claims, the GOP health bill doesn't classify rape or sexual assault as a preexisting condition

The Washington Post

The Washington Post's Fact Checker has also been hard at work this week correcting misinformation about the AHCA. In the story above they give the highest false rating possible to the claim that our healthcare bill classifies rape and sexual assault as pre-existing conditions. And in a story here, they again correct Democrat's misinformation disproving one Senator's claim that 129 million people with pre-existing conditions could be denied coverage under the AHCA.

Aetna to exit Obamacare exchanges in 2 remaining states

Reuters

Also this week, we saw yet another reason for why it is imperative that we repeal and replace Obamacare now as health insurer Aetna became the latest insurer to leave the Obamacare exchanges. They are one of multiple insurers that have decided to exit the law's exchanges and again highlight that this law is failing and must be replaced before it goes belly up.
