Background: The AFG Program, which also includes Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) and Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) grants, was authorized by Congress to provide federal funding directly to local fire departments and first responders. This funding enables them to obtain the equipment, training, and other resources necessary to protect their communities. Over the past 20 years, it has provided recipients with more than 79,000 individual awards, totaling more than $12 billion.
