Congressman McHenry Weekly Update

Another Week at Home in NC-10

This week I concluded my annual town hall meetings by hosting my seventh in Conover on Tuesday. This meeting was for residents of Catawba County and focused on similar topics as my previous six. We discussed the economy, the Chinese economy in light of stock market turmoil, disturbing videos from Planned Parenthood, and also the nuclear agreement with Iran. A full recap of this week's meeting can be found here, via the Hickory Daily Record.

Immediately prior to my town hall meeting, I had the pleasure of presenting a grant check to the Conover Fire Department. The grant, which is worth over $300,000, will be used to purchase new air packs and turnout gear for Conover's firefighters.

Wednesday I had the unique opportunity to do a 'store walk' at the Home Depot on East Franklin Boulevard in Gastonia. During the visit I met with employees, learned about the store, and how they serve the local community. Special thanks to the store employees who personalized my apron!

On Thursday I began my day in Gastonia with a visit to Gaston Family Health Services. While there I met with staff and took a tour of the facility learning about the services they offer.

Following that visit, I headed to Cleveland County where I toured the new town hall in Boiling Springs. Mayor Max Hamrick and City Manager Tom Hart took me on a tour of their beautiful new facility.

National Recognition for 10th District High Schools

The 10th District is blessed with numerous high quality, high performing K-12 schools. Whether they are public, private, or charter, our area schools are well prepared to serve the 10th District's students. Recently, three of these great schools received national recognition as they were included in Newsweek's list of America's Top High Schools 2015. Congratulations to Hickory's Challenger Early College High, Asheville's Buncombe County Early College, and the School of Inquiry and Life Sciences, also in Asheville, on making this prestigious list. These three schools are among the 15 North Carolina high schools that made this years list.

I Want to Know What You Think

Congress returns to Washington the week after Labor Day with a full agenda. Government funding expires at the end of September, we continue to work on a long-term highway bill, and something must be done to hold Planned Parenthood accountable for the appalling practices revealed in numerous videos in recent months. However, no vote in September will be as significant as the vote of disapproval on President Obama's nuclear agreement with Iran. With that in mind, I want to know what you think. I have expressed my strong disapproval of the bill and I have heard solid opposition to this deal throughout my visits in the 10th District.  Please register your opinion on the deal by clicking on the image below. The results of this survey will be revealed in my next weekly email update.

What I Have Been Reading

Americans hailed as heroes acted on 'instinct'

USA Today

Last weekend brought news of the tremendous bravery of three Americans who thwarted what likely would have been a horrific terrorist attack on a European train bound for France. Credit to American servicemen Spencer Stone and Alek Skarlatos who along with their childhood friend Anthony Sadler sprung to action to prevent what would have been a devastating attack. These three men have been recognized by the American and French governments and received much deserved recognition for their heroic actions.

What a series

Shelby Star

Another record breaking year at the American Legion World Series in Shelby. As this story from the Star outlines, this year's series was arguably the best one yet beginning with a huge crowd for the 7th Inning Stretch Festival and concluding with almost 9,000 people at the championship game and total attendance of over 117,000. The ALWS continues to be one of the 10th District's biggest annual events and I'm looking forward to the 2016 series next August.

U.S court places hold on federal water protection rule

Reuters

Important decision from a federal court in North Dakota as they placed a hold on the EPA's waters of the United States or WOTUS rule. This rule, if allowed to go into effect, will drastically increase federal regulation of bodies of water in this country. Regrettably, the rule's vast scope will allow for the federal government to regulate bodies of water as small as a ditch. This is an example of the EPA's overreach and I am glad to see the federal court recognizes this.
