Congressman McHenry Weekly Update

A Productive 114th Congress

Last week, the House wrapped up our work of a very productive 114th Congress. Over the last two years we've accomplished a great deal for the American people--mostly on a bipartisan basis. There was H.R. 2 which strengthened Medicare for future generations and represented the first real entitlement reform in nearly 20 years. We passed a long-term highway bill to improve our roads and bridges, the first in a decade. We passed bipartisan packages to expedite cures for diseases, confront our nation's opioid epidemic, and to assist victims of human trafficking.

On a personal front, I saw my bill to assist victims of North Carolina's eugenics program signed into law as well as a bill to help entrepreneurs invest in their businesses and a bill to end the disastrous HAMP program. At home, my office hosted an opioid crisis workshop for Tenth District law enforcement, assisted over 5,000 constituents with casework, and answered nearly 80,000 emails and letters.

While there is still much work to be done, I'm proud of what we have managed to accomplish this Congress. For a complete rundown of other significant pieces of legislation from the 114th Congress, click here or on the image below to see a detailed summary compiled by Speaker Ryan.

What Do You Think?

Less than a month from now, on January 3rd, the 115th Congress will be sworn into office. A few weeks later on January 20th, Donald J. Trump will be inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States. With the new Congress and Administration soon beginning, I want to know what you think. What are your priorities and what would you like to see accomplished? President-elect Trump has outlined an ambitious agenda, specifically focusing on healthcare, immigration enforcement, infrastructure, deregulation, and tax reform. Which of those would you like to see us tackle first? You can cast your vote by clicking on the image below and participating in the poll. I look forward to sharing these results with everyone in the coming weeks.

A Better Way on Tax Reform

Our nation's tax code is fundamentally broken. It is far too complicated and only benefits those wealthy individuals who can afford professional help to guide them through the maze of deductions and tax credits. Fortunately, House Republicans have a better way. This summer we laid out our principles for making the tax code more simple and more fair for all Americans. As the new Congress begins in January, Congressional Republicans working closely with the incoming Trump Administration will begin work on fixing our broken tax code. To get a better idea of what our reforms might look like, click here or on the image below to watch a brief video outlining our plan.

What I Have Been Reading

Spin City

eTextile Communications

Textiles have long been one of western North Carolina's most important industries and employers. Gastonia's Parkdale Mills has been a huge part of the textile industry in our area, becoming one of the nation's industry leaders. I highly recommend this story on Parkdale, celebrating their 100th anniversary.

Still the Kings

Shelby Star

Congratulations to the Shelby High School Golden Lions on yet another state football championship. Shelby defeated Northside-Jacksonville 28 to 6 yesterday in Raleigh to claim their fourth consecutive 2AA state title. The victory was number 758 all-time for the Golden Lions, making them the winningest program in North Carolina history. Congratulations to Coach Lance Ware and his entire team on this amazing accomplishment.

Thomas Lempereur gets redemption as South Point wins state title

Gaston Gazette

Congratulations also to the South Point Red Raiders on their state championship. South Point--who lost last year's title game to Rocky Mount--got some payback yesterday in Winston-Salem as they defeated Rocky Mount 16 to 7. This title marks the fifth in school history for South Point, another truly impressive accomplishment.
