Congressman McHenry Weekly Update

Busy Week Across the Tenth District

It was a beautiful week in western North Carolina and I had the pleasure of spending it traveling throughout the Tenth District for meetings and visits. On Tuesday, I started my morning at Hickory Christian Academy where I spoke to Ms. Watson's tenth grade civics class. Thanks to Headmaster Tracy Robinson and the entire school for hosting me.

Following the visit to Hickory Christian, I stayed in Hickory to visit Network Integrity Systems. There, I learned about the company and the important contracting work they do for the federal government.

I spent Tuesday afternoon at East Lincoln Speedway in Stanley. While at the speedway, I had the opportunity to drive one of the cars. These dirt track cars are similar to the cars that were targeted by EPA regulators earlier this year. After learning of this misguided regulation from impacted constituents, I introduced the RPM Act to block it. You can learn more about that bill here.

On Friday, I spent the day in Asheville, beginning with a visit to Asheville Middle School. There I learned about a joint program between Asheville City Schools, Buncombe County Schools, and the United Way that aims to prepare students for high school and ensure high graduation rates.

I spent the afternoon visiting Asheville Eye Associates and learning about their practice which has been serving western North Carolina for 50 years from six primary locations across the region.

I wrapped up my day in Buncombe County by visiting the GE Aviation facility in Asheville. There I toured the facility and learned about the ceramic aircraft engine parts they produce.

On Saturday, I spent the morning at Hickory's LP Frans Stadium where my family and I participated in Hickory's 2016 Walk to End Alzheimers. It was wonderful to see so many members of our community out early Saturday morning to walk to end this horrific disease.

Helping Out Local Fire Departments

The Tenth District is served by numerous dedicated fire departments that keep our communities safe. When I was first elected to Congress, I committed to ensuring each of these departments have the resources they need to get the job done. This week, those efforts continued as I presented grant checks to two Tenth District fire departments. On Monday, I was in Gaston County to present two different grant checks to the Lowell Volunteer Fire Department and their chief, Scott Moore. You can read more about the two grants the Lowell VFD received here and here.

On Friday while in Asheville, I presented a grant check to the Asheville Fire Department. The Asheville FD's grant, which you can read more about here, will be used to help fund fire safety initiatives throughout the city.

Secretary Clinton Email Investigation Continues

Late Friday afternoon we learned news that the FBI's investigation in to Secretary Clinton's personal email server is continuing. FBI Director James Comey sent a letter to members of Congress informing them that during the course of another investigation, the Bureau gained access to additional Clinton emails. When the initial investigation into Secretary Clinton's email server concluded, I expressed serious concerns that the more investigative work was needed. I commend the FBI and my Congressional colleagues on the Oversight Committee for continuing to look into the Clinton emails. You can read more about Friday's news here.

What I Have Been Reading

Some Heath Plan Costs to Increase by an Average of 25 Percent, U.S. Says

The New York Times

This week, the federal government acknowledged what many here in western North Carolina already know: Obamacare premiums will be skyrocketing again this year. On Monday, the Obama Administration revealed premium prices for the federal exchange for the coming year. The announcement surprised no one as we've long known that Obamacare continues to be unaffordable and must be replaced.

Carter suspends bonus clawbacks for California National Guard members

CNN

Late last weekend I was deeply troubled as news broke that members of the California National Guard were facing the prospect of having to payback bonus money they had received. The bonus money was paid improperly to these Guardsmen but it was done at no fault of their own. I commend Secretary of Defense Ash Carter for reversing the decision to clawback money from these soldiers.
