President Trump's First Address to Congress

On Tuesday evening, I joined with my colleagues from the House and Senate to hear President Donald Trump's first address to a joint session of Congress. Like many of my colleagues and Americans throughout the country, I was impressed by President Trump's optimistic and unifying message. The President laid out a clear plan for how he intends to create good-paying jobs, empower the middle class to succeed, and ensure the safety of all Americans. I was especially encouraged when he reaffirmed his commitment to fully repealing and replacing Obamacare, an effort which will begin in the House, this week. A Bill to Promote Investments in Businesses and Startups

I have long advocated for innovative forms of capital formation like investment crowdfunding and angel investing to help America's small businesses and startups grow. This week, I continued those efforts by reintroducing the Supporting America's Innovators Act of 2017. I had previously introduced this legislation last Congress when it passed the House with nearly 400 votes. Unfortunately it was unable to make it through the Senate and become law. This year, I've worked with colleagues in both the House and Senate to gather support for the legislation and it now enjoys bipartisan, bicameral support increasing its chances of becoming law. I Need Your Input on the Dodd-Frank Act

Almost seven years ago, when the Dodd-Frank Act became law, it was promised to the American people as the cure for what ailed our financial system. But instead of ending too-big-to-fail and restoring faith in our nation's financial institutions, the law has done the opposite. Today, many Americans are finding that it is much harder to save and borrow for vitally important life events like college or buying your first home. Additionally, everyday banking services like free checking are being eliminated.

As the House Financial Services Committee begins our work to reform Dodd-Frank, I want to know how the law has impacted you. Have you lost free checking or found it harder to obtain credit or a home mortgage? Have you been forced to close a small business because of the law's onerous rules? I want to hear from you. What I Have Been Reading

Asheville Jewish Community Center bomb threat to go to FBI

Asheville Citizen-Times

I was horrified earlier this week when I learned that our community had become the latest target of a bomb threat against a Jewish Community Center. This type of hate has no place among our citizenry. Thank you to local law enforcement for their quick response, initial investigation, and cooperation with the FBI to get to the bottom of this incident.

Catawba County Commissioners attend national conference in DC

Hickory Daily Record

It was great to welcome members of the Catawba County Commission to my Washington office this week to discuss priorities for the county. The Commissioners were in Washington this past week for the annual Legislative Conference for the National Association of Counties.

Shelby ranked fourth micropolitan area in the U.S.

Shelby Star

Congratulations to Shelby which was recently ranked fourth in the 2016 rankings of U.S. micropolitan areas. Micropolitan areas are adjacent counties that have at least one urban area with population over 10,000 but less than 50,000. Shelby moved up one spot in this year's rankings after finishing 2015 in fifth place.
