Congressman Patrick McHenry (R, NC-10) released the following statement after the Shelby Police Department arrested the suspected perpetrator of last night's shooting at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina:

“Last night’s shooting at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina is a horrific and senseless tragedy, made worse that it occurred in a house of worship. It is with great relief we learn the perpetrator of this heinous crime has been brought into custody in Cleveland County. I would like to commend Chief Jeff Ledford and the Shelby Police Department for their professional and quick work taking this monster off our streets. We must also say thanks to the member of the public who spotted the suspect and reported his whereabouts to authorities.

“Now that the suspect has been captured, we can begin the mourning process. Giulia and I join the rest of the country in sending our deepest condolences and prayers to the victims and families impacted by this unspeakable tragedy.”
