Conover – Today, Congressman Patrick McHenry issued the following statement regarding the passing of Margaret “Sparky” Sparkman, known by many as the Gourd Lady:
“I’m deeply saddened to hear about the passing of 'the Gourd Lady.' Sparky was a national treasure and a big asset to our region, making the national news and even an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. She was a tireless supporter of the YMCA of Catawba Valley for over thirty-five years. An important part of GOP Lincoln Day Dinners and other events for many years, I still cherish the elephant gourd I purchased years ago. Her talent and love of life were truly contagious.”
