Chuck Costner doesn't think his father would be alive today if America had nationalized health care. His father, Charles Sr., had triple-bypass surgery at Gaston Memorial Hospital last August -- two days after he went to his doctor and complained of dizziness. In countries with socialized medicine, Costner said, the average wait to see a cardiologist or other specialist is six weeks.

The session drew a standing-room only crowd to the Cool Springs Administration Building. McHenry estimated perhaps 250 in attendance. McHenry, a Republican, first offered his outlook on three issues before taking questions from the floor.

It was a smaller and mostly subdued crowd that turned out at the town hall-style meeting U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry held at CoMMA on Monday night. The crowd was much smaller than those who turned out for similar meetings in Hickory and Mooresville but still larger than in year's past. Some of the nearly 350 people who were there came to vent both against and for the proposed national health care bill.
