Thank you Congressman for standing for your constiutents. How can most of the democrats face their constituents when the overwhelming majority do not approve of Obama Healthcare?
  • Jennifer Knapp commented on 3/12/2010
I agree with what you had mentioned. Living in the Western part of the state I have noticed that many people are giving up and others are getting stronger. As a full time student at Lenoir-Rhyne University I see more non-traditional students such as myself gaining an undergrad degree and many others are in the Community Colleges around hoping that they can gain a decent job after graduation. Its been a struggle with many of us working part-time jobs that we don't like just to make ends meet. If this job situation keeps lacking many are going to be living on the streets. I would like to see the depression leave the area and be gone for good.

Say, why not leave U. S. Grant on the $100.00 bill, and create a new $200.00 bill and put Ronald Reagan on it, then everybody is happy, and the Gipper gets his place on the bigger bill! Sincerely, T. R. Whisenant

Patrick Can you introduce bills to permanently stop allowing illegals to entitlements that hard working taxpaying Americans are denied who have lost their jobs and are having a tough time making ends meet. I don't think it is right that the illegals are allowed anything. Also can a bill be introduced that would require one parent be a naturalized citizen in order for children of illegals to be granted citizenship. Imagine the savings that would be generated. Use this money to create or retrain people for new career opportunities.

Americans. (North Carolina state law says contracts must go to the lowest bidder; although if it is close, I believe the North Carolina contractor is given a chance to match the out of state bid.) I will appreciate if you will provide some figures on this during your next video as I too am concerned about getting our people back to work. Thank you for your time and any answers you can give us.

Congressman McHenry, We need to balance the budget, yes. We also need to eliminate the government debt to foreign countries. We all know that. I don't believe Congress has the will and power to stop Obama spending. I don't think we can ever set aside enough money to pay off the national debt to foreign countries. So it will keep getting worse until ??? what will happen?

The United States government, unfortuantely, works in a series of "silos." A comprehensive manufacturing strategy without a totally complimentary trade strategy is a recipe for another failed band aid. Lipinski's manufacturing strategy bill dances around the edges but is a start - just like addressing currency, border taxes and trade law enforcement are pieces of the puzzle. Bottom line is that unless we address the connected issues with a broad based strategy we won't change the game. Schauer of MI is an activist for mfg and Lipinski seems to be. Time for some serious outreach and real champions in DC......

My number one issue is government getting too big and building the National debt to the point that our Moody rating is being downgraded from AAA to AA. Please continue what you are doing to protect jobs, in particular manufacturing jobs, support nuclear energy, off-shore drilling, and other energy initiatives. Thank you for all you are doing for WNC and the Country to protect our values and national security interests. George Bradshaw Lake Lure, NC

Congressman McHenry, I do agree with you on many ways to correct those sitituation we now have in our country. Yet I question the republican elect that now are involved with government. All I hear is excuses from you and John McCain. You can not be there and allow secret meeting of another party and say they won,t communicate with us. What you are telling me, the republican party is not using their knowledge and strenght to stop these conditions. All I hear is, "we were not invited." It is my opinion anyone serving the people as elected individuals, received all invitations necessary to atttend any meeting involving the people. Closed dorrs involving this nation are invitations for immediate interuptions. Regardless of party affiliations. Congressman McHenry, You appear to me as an individual with control of personal emotions. That is an admirable trait. This does not eliminate the need to strongly, loudly, angrily, express opposition to sugestions you oppose. It enhances your concerns with emphasis. Regardless of psychology. Who am I to prepose this improper action. An old man who has played the games.

I own a plant in Bluefield, Va. that manufactures products for the coal mining industry across the country. We purchase raw materials from severeal suppliers in North Carolina to make our products. If the cap and trade bill passes, the coal industry won't need us nearly as much and the domino effect will go on down the line, as we won't need the North Carolina suppliers near as much. Can't the democrats understand how business works in this country? Ivan D. Jones Mooresville, NC 28115-2380

I listened to your comments regarding jobs in western North Carolina. I agree with everything you say but am waiting on specifics. Why not get a movement or bill to repeal CAFTA and NAFTA and drop out of the WTO? I am presently unemployed. I worked for Freightliner in Mt. Holly, NC since 1993 but was laid off Nov 7, 2008. The truck that was being built in Mt. Holly is being built in Santiago MX. A contract agreement with Daimler Trucks North America(Freightliner) was for 70% of all trucks sold in North America to be built at Mt. Holly. The company violated this agreement and the company lost the ruling through arbitration but they still have changed their build schedule to the 70/30 policy. Freightliner also has a plant in Cleveland, NC that build the class 8 trucks but their production has been lessened since they opened a mega plant in Saltillo, MX. You guessed it, building a class 8 truck as well. If NAFTA were repealed, thousand of jobs would return to North Carolina not only through Freightliner but various parts vendors who are relocating to Mexico to lessen transportation costs and also to obtain cheaper labor. The unions in North Carolina would make considerable concessions if give the opportunity through proper negotiations, of that I am sure. This is one instance where I have first hand knowledge. Consider LaZy Boy furniture. They closed the plant in Lincolnton, NC and opened a larger plant in Saltillo MX, right beside the local airport. NAFTA. We don't need it!
  • Stan Cutts commented on 3/12/2010
When are you ever going to become an independent thinker and stop towing the Republican line? Just because you voted against CAFTA, do you think that satisfies that agenda? As a staunch Republican, I am loathe to vote for you again because of your strict adherence to the Republican agenda, obviously dictated to you by your party bosses. Do you represent your constituents or just cowtow to your bosses? I think I know the answer to that question already. For example, I met you a few years ago and asked you a question about the Cuban embargo. You spouted the Bush policy practically verbatim. Failed American policy that has not worked for fiftty years needed to be continued or strenghthened. Well, surely that has worked in he meantime. You have hurt North Carolina farmers and the Cuban people in the meantime. You continue to be an example of why term limits should be imposed, and an example of someone who would never vote that way. stancutts@aim.com Burke County

  • Joanna Robbins commented on 3/13/2010
Can these horrible bills if they get passed and become law....can they be repealed by a majority Congress and Senate? We are starting a new company and we're scared to death that the dollar will fail us and our business won't survive because of the economy. Does our future look that bleak?
  • Lawrence Nosker commented on 3/13/2010
The problem is our standard of living is so much higher than that of those in these outsourcing countries that we cannot compete with them and we should not be forced to lower our standard of living. You can't have fair trade when you don't have a similar standard of living. The rest of the world wants us and other countries that have our standard of living to come down to them, we need to get them up to us or at least half way up. There is noway for us to compete with a country that pays there people for a months work what we make in a day or less. We should not support these countries unless they improve their standard of living. The GREED of the American businessman has mad most of the outsourcing possible. This is a simplified example but he is not happy with 4 chauffeur driven limousines, he wants 8 of them. There is nothing wrong with that either except that he wants us to lower our standard of living while he increases his on our backs. I truly believe that a flat tax or a national sales tax will give most americans more money in their pocket and pay down our deficit in an extremely short period of time. You can't fix everything all at once, just like health care don't retool the whole system just fix what's broken and it shouldn't take 10 years. Why is it everything takes 10 years to fix or start except taxes those are immediate. If you wanted to jump start the economy all you had to do was give all the bail out money to the American People and they would have spent it all and put everybody back to work and really stimulated the economy. While that was taking place you could have fixed what was broken and let the 2 meet about 2 to 3 years down the road. Just my opinion.

I don't live in your district or even your state but follow you on your blog since you are one of the few with common sense and concern for America. My question to you: Since my representative does NOT answer any questions and has never held a town hall meeting, is: How can the proposed Health Care bill be passed (actually cramed down our throats) when the majority of Americans do NOT want it, nobody has even seen it, and "their" economic information regarding it is so full of holes ....are the Democrats totally deaf or just so arrogant they think they know 'best"?
  • Barbara Williams commented on 3/13/2010

I live in Cleveland County (Polkville). I moved here in Dec 2005. I am constantly amazed how this rural community has handled the recent economic down turn. Ihe county may have had to cut work hours and not fill open positions but has avoided layoffs. The county seems to have a plan for its future of slow growth. This doesn't fit with our national governments goals of quick returns that have proven to be economic ruin. Why is the federal government blocking cleveland county from developing its natural resource Fresh Water? South Mountian provides a natural watershed but local farmers and sportsmen must watch this resource flow away even in times of heavy rain fall. Water will help bring economic development and jobs. Planning for the future, developing the land and using resources available don't mix with the national governments plan. Sending our textile jobs out of the country and and destroying a system of small regional development.
  • Harry Loomis commented on 3/13/2010
Yes, I agree our government has made some really bad and somewhat stupid trade deals but that is done and those jobs are gone. How do you propose to stop the big business lobbyists and the power they have in Washington to prevent anymore bad trade deals that send our jobs over seas?
  • Joseph Spears commented on 3/13/2010
We absolutely need health care reform now in order to help small business create jobs, give everyone access to health care and to get away from a health care system that is unsustainable. You continually demonstrate no understanding of ecomomics or of ecomomic policy. Balancing the budget this year would require cuts in Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid as well as cutting the military and would result in the loss of jobs. I can only assume that that is what you are proposing since you never provide any details to your policy statements. Yes we need to control spending but there is a huge difference between policies needed in the short term to shore up the economy and the long term. Our district deserves so much better representation.
  • Judith McCord commented on 3/13/2010
Thank you for keeping me update on the direction you believe is best for us here in NC. Please keep persuading the other Congressmen not to vote for the Healthcare. And get off the subject, set it aside and get on the more serious problems. I get so tired of Obama and Polosi pushing it and not listening to the people. They need to focus onJobs and economy! Thanks. Your a winner. I wish others on the hill were.
  • C.F. Robinett commented on 3/13/2010
I appreciate all those Congressmen or Senators who are fighting for "We The People." All citizens of North Carolina and the other states need to bombard both Republican and Democratic Congressmen and Senators with emails letting them know that they are expected to fight for "We The People" not N. Pelosi or H. Reid or B. Obama. When elected those officials pledge to fight and stand for "We The People" . We should let all elected officials know that if they don't stand for "We The People" then "We The People" will not stand for them. No longer can conservatives sit on the sidelines and let liberals run over us. We must unite and fight the good fight. We must protect our Godly Constitution, protect our precious liberties, morality and values. We must put homosexuals back in the closet. We must save every unborn child from murder by liberals who have no conscience. We must force judges to rule on the basis of our Godly Constitution and not previous ruled cases. In other words conservatives must clean house in Washington and grow a backbone and let people know we serve God and not man. We must fight the fight of our forefathers who for the most part were preachers of God's word.
  • Dave Satterthwaite commented on 3/13/2010
We also need make encourage the free market to make the jobs. They make jobs with worth. We have to many entitlement programs that are now going broke and a government that wants to grow that produces jobs with no worth and only take from the public treasure. 47 states now have state worker pensions that are underfunded. The government and state workers make more than the private sector. We need to get a handle on the spending and make some cost cuts that are sure to raise cane. But who is going to do that at risk of their reelection?
  • E Anthony commented on 3/13/2010
Congressman McHenry, Your Job Plan "sounds" like a good one; and, I agree. However, I am disappointed in your actions. A key factor in your Job Plan is balancing the budget; yet, you (and all the polticians in Washington ) continue to spend and incure more debt. One example, you were responsible for volunteer fire stations built in our area that cost hundreds of thousand of dollars. Are they nice? Sure. Were they needed? No. You said at one of your town meetings you worked hard to obtain grant money to build the fire stations. Is grant money not part of our National Debt? Please show me you are serious about balancing the budget by your actions. Thank you for your stand on Health Care; and, thank you for your willingness to serve our area in these difficult times. With the attention being paid to healthcare reform and cap and trade, the EPA is quietly enforcing a form of cap and trade on its own. Is there no concern in Congress that the EPA us usurping the authority of Congress? Is there no effort to rein in the EPA before they completely destroy our capitalist system?
  • Nadine Bagwell commented on 3/13/2010
We call, we email, we gather in groups to protest and we vote, but we are closed out on demanding our representatives and senators in congress listen to us on healthcare, cap & trade, ethics, and SO MANY OTHER ISSUES that are destroying our country. HOW DO WE MAKE THEM LISTEN AND STOP THIS TRAGEDY?
  • Ron Cooper commented on 3/13/2010
I think you are 100% correct! Each of your topics addresses a specific problem faced by the US and even by each voter. As a small business owner I am very concerned about jobs leaving the US. We constantly hear about how we must be "globaly competative". But is this really true? No other countries must face an EPA, or an IRS, or a OSHA, or a court system that awards millions of $$ for even the smallest company accident. I suggest that we force these same types of laws on other countries, via "fines" on their imports whih impose an equal value amount. If they create these laws, then the playing field is level. If they don't, then through "fines" we create a level field. eithor way US jobs are safer, and/or our "green" planet is saved (great for the tree-huggers too).

#1 The current budget deficit is due to the war in Iraq and Bush's tax cuts for the rich and ultra rich. All data that has been published shows that we entered the war with a small deficit and the war was not financed with any offset for costs. This cost is what put the deficit where it is today. #2 How are we to re-educate and retrain workers for new jobs when the budget is so bad that we are laying off teachers. I am a school teacher and see students everyday who are sick or underfed and cannot pay attention in school to receive an education. Why are you against giving these children affordable health care? #3 I am a registered Republican but do not agree with the policies you and your fellow congressmen are following. YOU do not represent me.

You're right our foreign trade policies are bad and people forget it was the Democrats that started this. You're also correct in saying we have to become much less dependent on foreign oil---we need to rely more on our own resources. Sadly, before this all comes about more people will be losing their homes that they've struggled to pay for, no matter how small or humble the home is. The state of the country and our leadership in Washington is sad. I pray that you're right, that our best days are ahead. The Democrats are doing everything they can to turn us into a Socialist state, they have to be stopped, and I don't know what the answer is. It's as though the voters in the last election forgot that sometimes the devil you don't know may be worse than the devil you know, it's all so depressing that I don't watch the news. I listen to updates by my husband and your commentaries. When it comes to ObamaCare, do you know when we email Kay Hagen to tell her we are against it, she actually has the nerve to email you back with a reply that amounts to "I don't care what you think, I'm going to do what I want to." You remind me of Jesse Helms, he was blunt, but he did what was right and he cared about the people. Good luck and God be with you, Sylvia Boltin

Lending maybe a problem for some businesses, but I can't pay back the loans I have now. A loan of any type will only get me deeper into debt. My business still has little to no work and with no work not many small businesses can repay loans. I had to terminate six people in the fall of 2008. I only have one person working about every other week now. The government talks about jobs and not about work. With no work no jobs will come back. The government can not create jobs in the private sector but they can and do destroy jobs with ease and with out a care in the world because all government employees know they have a fool proof job on the backs of the taxpayer. Government rules and regulations will not help and business. The best help any business could get would be if the Federal Government would just vanish.
  • Ross Henderson commented on 3/13/2010
Thank you Mr. McHenry for this excellent forum. One of the more frequent complaints that I hear about this congress is that they voted themselves a 14% pay raise and voted not to give Social Security recipients a COLA increase for 2010 and 2011. Don't you think this sends the wrong message to the american people about their government? Congress has become a ruling class - not subject to the laws or bills (social security, health care) they enact. Some suggest that it is time to enact a 28th amendment which states that congress shall enact no law that does not apply to all citizens equally, including congressmen and their staff. Would you be in favor of such an amendment?

I agree with what you say to make things better for nc. What can we do in our area of Cleveland county? I do not enjoy watching working Americans lose their jobs to foreigners and all I pick up to buy is from overseas. I bought a table for my breakfast area. I did not see made in Viet-nam until it came in a box and in small letters it says made in viet-nam. My husband fought and served Americans there in 68-69 and met with lots of danger and was wounded and still suffers from problems related to that place. He was spat upon as he came through the airport on his way home by Americans. People need to wake up or it will be to late. My grandson just got back from Iraq. Now I am not happy that he will probably go to afganastian. He wants to support America. I only have one grandchild. I want him to do his duty. But all this wasteing of huge amounts of money by the crooked people in Wash. Also letting China own us is wrong. Keep up your good work. We need you to hang tuff. God Bless you. In response to Mr. Robert Chambers, as Mr. Chambers said this, "How can most of the democrats face their constituents when the overwhelming majority do not approve of Obama Healthcare?". First, it is not Obama Healthcare. Secondly, I share your worries most democrats want a public option and true blue "Universal Healthcare". What is being debated is a long way from being Universal Healthcare. As, I am sure Mr. McHenry will agree, that there is more "Republican" points put in this Healthcare reform bill than there was in the 1990's when Hillary Clinton was trying to pass it. From most of the Republicans all I hear is the cry of "Socialism"? The change that needs to be made in Washington and across America is a fact check. I ask anyone, if this is truly Socialism, then why is it that a lot of Democrats are unhappy with the plan, and think Obama is a sell out to the left? On a side note, when neither the right-wing, nor the left-wing is satisfied something is wrong. What I think you have is a pretty main-stream reform bill, which is why both extreme sides feel angry. Thanks, David Atkins, Jr.

We need to stop federal illegal and unnecessary taxation and the states need to take back their rights that the Feds took away from them. Stop sending money to the Feds and keep it in the state. Thank you Congressman! Spot on! NO to 'cap and tax', NO to Obamacare, NO to bad trade deals! We can raise revenue in the fed. by lowering tax rates spawning growth in small and mid size business, and use that revenue to pay down the debt. YES to that! We Americans can utilize our own resources in a responsible, environmentally friendly way to reduce our use of foreign oil, thereby creating even more jobs. Keep up the good fight! We appreciate your optimism and confidence in Western North Carolina!

Congressman McHenry, With so many pressing issues for our country, how in the world do you think that introducing a bill to put Ronald Reagan on the $50 bill is going to address any of these issues? How can you have your picture taken with grant recepients for Homeland Security when you voted against this funding? Honestly! I respectfully ask you to please support President Obama's plan for health care.

Thanks for all you do to keep us informed of the concerns you have and what you are doing in such a positive light to help restore jobs and assure us that you will do all you can to prevent the horrendous health care bill from passing.

I wasn't sure WHAT to believe about the contents of the new Health Care Bill. Now that it has been signed I have to tell you, I'm pretty darned happy with "some" of the changes. My 74 year old mother is also. She LOVES the fact that the donut hole will be closed and I LOVE the fact that I will no longer have to worry about being denied by my Insurance company for being sick (and a few other things). As far as my premiums going up it's not an issue, they go up ANYWAY at least twice a year. From myself and my 74 year old mother I just want to tell YOU to "KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF MY HEALTH CARE". If you try to repeal the entire Bill you are going to have a fight on your hands. My mothers friends are saying the same thing. If you want to target certain things in the bill fine, but do NOT make me go back to the way it was before, leave the GOOD things in it like making them spend 80-85% of the money they collect on the insured.

Thanks for your hard work congressman, We all know that that health care needs fixed. If you go to have a test done & it cost $500.00 with no insurance. If you have insurance the same test then cost $1000.00, why. Where does the extra money go? If our congress & senate had worked together for the good of the citizens of our Country, The Health Care Bill would have been passed a long time ago. The behind closed doors people knew they had something to hide, If not swing the doors open so America can know whats going on. Was that not what President Obama said he was going to do. God Please help the United States of Americe.

I remember when Roe verses Wade was passed dispite the fact that the majority of the country was against it and it is still on the books. How in heaven's name can we ever overturn all that is being force on what the American people don't want? You are doing a good job. You are a light in a dark place.

Speaking of "Answers for the 10th", what are your thoughts about as many as twenty-three states introducing or passing resolutions or laws based upon the tenth amendment, asserting their state's rights to nullify, within their state, any federal laws that they legally consider unconstitutional? The text of Amendment X reads, "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." Do you think that the powers of the federal government needs to be reigned in by the States and may properly be limited, in accordance with both the Ninth and Tenth Amendments to the Constitution?

We need to stop federal illegal and unnecessary taxation and the states need to take back their rights that the Feds took away from them. Stop sending money to the Feds and keep it in the state.Help small businesses with getting credit. Put controls on Unions. Put a moritorium on new spending. http://boilertreatment.com

Congressman McHenry, Your Job Plan "sounds" like a good one; and, I agree. However, I am disappointed in your actions.Take our votes and control what is going on. Instead of looking for answers from every other source,EXCEPT OURSELVES. I am and fan and supporter of yours. I have watched the news with some concern and have yet to see any efforts to address the China Trade situation and meanful solutions to our unemployment woes. I have some ideas that you might give some consideration to. 1. We need to get the EPA AGENCY under control and change how they do business. Any rule or law that would impact the general public should be approved by the public/congress. 2. We need to immediately start developing our natural energy resources and quit buying our energy from our enemies. As you are already aware we will need at least 5 years to bring other new types of energy on line. 3. Fees on Imports from other countries should be based on the same level that the country that is importing charges the U.S. when we import to them. I realize that these three ideas would require major changes in U. S.policy and impact most world affairs, however, we need to take care of ourselves first and develope a strong stance in order to provide effective leadership throughout the world.
